Decent sub in the $200-250 range?

I currently have a cheapo Aiwa powered sub that I'm running through a Sony 845 receiver.
I'd like something with a little more umph, but doesn't have to shake the whole house.
There is an input for a second sub on the Sony so I was thinking about keeping both going, but that may not be necessary if I got something better.
What brands, models are recommended in that price range?
Thanks

From what I have read the best under $200 sub is the Sony SA-WM40(I think that is the model #).

There has been alot of talk about this sub the last year or so, but I have never heard it myself.

The Sony WM-40 is a nice $150 sub. But for $250 other quality subs come into play.

Such as:

Velodyne CT-80
PSB Alpha SubZero
Klipsch KSW-10
Paradigm PDR-8

Note that most of these subs retail for over $250 but with a little work you should be able to find them for around $250.

I have the Velodyne CT-80 and love it. I've listened to many different subs, and liked the Velodyne because of its musicality. It blends very well with the rest of my system, but can move a surprising amount of air when I choose to open it up.

Thanks for the info.
Is the Velodyne good for HT use as well?
Any good online sources for purchase online, or is the best bet just to hit my area electronics stores?

The CT-80 works great for HT. (actually that's where mine is hooked up).
If you're living in a house and would like more impact, the step up to the CT-120 (12" driver) isn't that big of a price increase. (but it will be more than your $250 budget.)

Love Sony SUB SA-WM40

The Sony SA-WM40 is a great sub, have had one for nearly a year, great power really pushes the 12" woofer. It has auto on/off so you never have to worry about turning it on or forgetting to shut it off! You can adjust the frequency and the output level, and it has very flexible connection methods. I got mine delivered for around

Thanks gang for the input on this.

Now I have to decide...do I go in under budget with the Sony,
Stay around the basic budget with the V CT-80, or break the bank and go full speed ahead with the V CT-120?

Humm.......what to do, what to do?

AudioSource SW Fifteen 200 Watt Powered Subwoofer.

I bought one of these a while ago. Didn't know if I would like it or not but once I got it home and saw how much it shook the room I was happy. Its definately not 'high end' but its a large woofer combined with a powerful amp. It does the job, much better than any 10 inch 100 watt woofer will from any manufacturer.

Amazon has it listed for 199.99.

A great sub for the money IMHO is Velodyne. You can get this pretty cheap under $400 for a 10" or so I believe. esp if you purchase it from the internet . You can def get an 8" for the price you're looking to spend, but would suggest stepping up to the 10" at leat.

When I put it up against my friend's 1.2k + sunfire, don't see nearly enough difference to justify the price difference, except for the amazingly small size of the sunfire.
