Hi all I'm thinking of purchasing a play station 2 and was wondering if it was code free. If not can it be made to play any region DVD's ? Tlhanks

The PS2 is the region where ever you buy it. If you purchase it in the United States, it will be Region 1. There are some tricks which have been used to get Region 1 DVDs to work in import PS2s, so they might work with playing imported DVDs on PS2.

DVDs with no regional coding play fine, but if you get say a Region 2 disc, those tricks might work, but there is no guarentee.

I have seen advertisements for mod chips for the ps2 that enable the playback of recordable media as well as region free settings. I have not tried this new mod chip but the older playstation 1 mod chip worked great.

There are 2 versions, one uses your ps2 usb port, the other has to be soldered onto the main board. If anyone has used these new chips some feedback would be appreciated.

Actually, the first version uses the USB port and has one wire to be soldered to the board. the other is connected to the board only. Just clarifying this.

Ya its called Neo, you will need to get a GameShark 2 (version 1.9 works the best and is hard to find cause SCEA forced Gameshark to update their product or something)

Or, you can get RegionX for PS2, which plugs into your memory card slot. You load a CD-ROM and select desired region, then load the DVD movie. It works pretty well. They're available at EBay for about $30. I paid $42 for mine, new. Now I've got a Malata, so I don't really use it, though...
