Cable or DirectTV?

Which would you choose?

In my town, basic cable, with the basic channels, nothing added. No TNN/TNT, etc. is about $44. With digital cable topping at around $90. Crazy.

DirectTV is offering 105 channels + My locals, for $37.99 /month. Which is a good deal IMHO.

they have free dish/installation right now too.

What woul dyou pic?

I'm not a big fan of DISH even though I have it, but did you check out their packages? The thing about DISH (not sure about Direct TV), you don't pay any taxes like cable does. If the package is $37.99, it's $37.99 per month, unlike cable which charges for everything.

I just went through this same thing.

I got DirectTV and am very happy. After years and years with cable, I can say I like DirectTV MUCH better.

I had Dish installed last month. I got in on their 'I like 9' promotion where you get all of those channels that Directv charges $31.99 for for only $9. Plus the locals and HBO comes out to $28 a month, still waayy cheaper than the $53 i was forking over to ATT.

Did you have the pro installation done? Did they tear your house apart?

Pro Installation is done by a local contractor, so there is no general answer to this question.

I dumped cable 5 years ago for Direct TV and have never regretted it.

More channels, more ppv options, better sound quality, better picture quality on both of my tv's for less than cable.

I have had DirecTV for 7 years now. Love it. But I recently stepped down from Total Choice and only have HBO and the HDTV channels right now ($12 per month).

My cable company cannot filter out the high channels while I have a cable modem, so I am paying $11 (Broadcast rate) for like 60 channels of Basic Cable. Very good deal, tho it kinda stinks watching it on my 16:9 HDTV the picture is definately not as good as DirecTV and the 1080i HDnet and HBO-HD channels are so awesome.. wow some of the shows are amazing.

HDTV is supposed to start on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS in my area on May 1 or 2, so I cannot wait for that....I hope DirecTV picks up all the local HDTV channels, but I doubt that will happen until Dish/DirecTV merge...

Actually I installed it myself. Took about 4 hours but that's just because of lunch and 'cuz I didn't read the manual first. Probably could have done it much faster.

Switched from DirecTV to TWC

I recently switched from DirecTV to Time Warner Cable due to high definition programming. I ended up getting more channels with TWC, including HBO and Showtime for less than what I paid DirecTV for. And I get 8 HD Channels (local channels + HBOHD + Showtime HD, no HDNet) with no receiver to buy.

However, DirecTV has better reception (the picture quality is much, much better), the sound is exceptional. DirecTV has pay-per-view movies in DD and widescreen, while I have yet to get a pay-per-view from TWC that has both, if not one of the formats. Signal loss is prevalent with my digital cable on certain channels, which results in a high amount of pixelation and aggravation.

If only DirecTV had more HD channels (including local HD channel broadcasts) and HD receivers were free/more affordable, I would switch back. In the meantime, I will stay with TWC for their HD programming until DirecTV provides the same amount of HD Programming.

Is this the case everywhere? Because if it is so, then it may be worth dealign with AT&T for cable, and sticking out the cable modem...

Not from what I understand. Of 5 people at work I know who have a cable modem, 3 of them can get all the channels and 2 of the others cannot.
