SPL meter
Here is my newbie question:
1) What exactly does the SPL meter do?
2) How do I read the meter to find out what is the best placement or volume for the speakers?
Thanks for helping a newbie(addict) out.

The SPL meter measures the output of your speakers (In Decibels). You sit in your listening position and play a test tone through each of the speakers and set then to the point where they are all equal. A disk like Video Essentials will walk you through the process, and supply the tones.

Also...
I have ordered the Avia DVD from DDD, but it is on backorder right now. How much does a basic SPL meter cost, and what kind should I look for? I am totally clueless on what brands there are and stuff. Sorry.

Once you get into this hobby or addiction as I like to call it, I assure you it will be used more than once or twice. Mine is used at least 1-2 a year

I buy a new piece of equipment at least once a year, be that a new TV or a reciever or new speakers or dvd player for the last 8 years I have replaced at least 1 component of my system, and if you replace the TV or speakers you will have to recalibrate after the burn in period

For anyone who's interested:
My local radio shack in South Pasadena, CA had a tag on their SPL Meter indicating the sale went from 2/28 to 3/31. They were extremely low on inventory (I picked up their last boxed set) so you might want to call ahead.

My city has 2 Radio Shacks and the first one only had the display model so I went to the other. The other had two on sale at $29.99 so I made the purchase. While he is ringing me up I open the box up and notice one of the toggle switchs is broken. So I ended up having to buy the display model which should be okay because it sits behind the counter were nobody plays with it. He couldn't find the box for it but gave me the case from the defective one. Also no instructions but he went to a special Radio Shack web site and printed everything for me. He will look for the old box and call me if he finds it. This gives me an out for a return if I use it and want to take it back.

The Radio Shack by me doesn't even display them. When I got mine I had to ask, then explain what it was. The guy looked in back for about 5 minutes and found the only one they had in stock. Great way to sell a product huh? Keep it in back and don't tell your employees about it.
BTW if anyone is thinking about getting those $50 RCA cordless headphones they have on sale for $20, don't bother. They are terrible.
