Apex 500W: anyone having problems?
Hi everyone. I'm sort of the new guy here but I have a question. The first DVD player I bought was the Apex 500W. For a while it worked fine, but now this thing skips like there's no tomorrow. For a while I thought it was the discs but I don't think I could have purchase that inordinate number of defective discs.
I called Apex and they said the only thing they could do is have me send it out and to fix it themselves. By the time I spend the cash to ship it, have it fixed and ship it back, I might as well buy a new one.
Has anyone else bought this player and had problems?
Thanks everyone
Robb

Alot of people have problems with the apex units.
They are great when they work but that doesnt seem
to be a very long time in most cases. You can check
out alot of user reviews at www.vcdhelp.com.
They have a ton of information available on many
different units. My next purchase might be something
from apex also, but you can bet I am buying the
extended warranty. I just cant find anything that
supports as many formats as this besides maybe
the daewoo.

I had the same problem with mine
Hi Cap!
I feel your pain - my 500W worked great for the first few months, then started to skip and often would not even read a disc upon insertion (kept giving the no disc error). I called APEX and they had me send it in - the good news is that even though it was outside the 90-day "parts AND labor" warranty (but still within "parts ONLY"), they fixed it and sent it back to me for no charge (except my cost to send it to them - they covered repairs and return shipping). Bottom line out of my pocket was $12 and change for UPS - not all that bad. It is working good so far now

I called Apex. I was told that because it was nearly a year old and "out of warranty" I'd have to pay $40.00 to have it fixed.
For the cost of sending it out and having it repaired and then having it sent back I might as well look into buying a new one.
One thing is for sure is I will most likely not buy another Apex DVD player next time around.

After all the hype I found myself in walmart looking at the stack of new apex 1100W players. 73 dollars.... I spent that much taking the wife to dinner earlier that night, so what the hell.
I wanted a player to support my new hobby of making vcd's and boy is this thing great.
THE best feature for me by far was the conversion of PAL vcd to NTSC output so I can watch all my downloaded vids without long software conversions. To my great surprise it also plays MPEGs directly burned to cd-r. No need to use vcd format at all. It just lists the files in their subdirectories. Great for keeping track of small video clips.
MP3 playback is nice, again it orders everything in subdirectories so putting in a disk with 100+ mp3's is not a problem as long as you have them separated into organized folders.
DVD playback was ok, I didnt notice any problems at all and it operates a hell of a lot smoother and quieter than my 4 year old phillips.
This thing is a great deal if you want to use your player for more than the storebought disks. With this thing, a broadband connection, and a cd-r drive you can have alot of fun.
