is this a good dvd player?

there is a good deal on amazon for this dvd player but not sure if it is worth the money. it is a Panasonic RP56 Progressive Scan DVD Player. It will be $190. is this a good price for this player? does anyone have this player? My tv is pretty old though, about 10 years old, 27" size. would this still be a good player even though i wont be able to take advantage of the progressive scan? Thanks.

Progressive scan is useless for you on your current TV. To take advantage of progressive scan, you need a tv that is capable of displaying progressive scan(like an HDTV). You can always use this player on your TV in interlaced mode but unless you plan on getting a TV that supports progressive scan soon, you should just get a regular interlaced player and save some money.

The RP56 is a good player but, since you won't be using the progressive scan features, you would probably be just as happy with the RV31 which is listed at $140.00 on Amazon (very good price!). Use the money saved for DVD rentals!

I agree. Save the $50 and go for the non-prog player.

Then go ahead and spend the money for the RP56. Either way I think you will be happy.

Then go ahead and get the 56. It's a great player and well worth the money. From Hometheaterhifi's Progressive Player Shootout (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...-2-8-2001.html):

"Overall, this is an excellent player at an excellent price."

And you're getting for $40 less.

Get the RP56 as long as your new TV will have the ability to show 480p video. Almost ALL non-HDTV's do NOT have the ability to display 480p so if your plan is to just buy a new non-HDTV then you still will get NO benefit from the RP56's Progressive Scan capabilites!
