Hi, I'm helping my cousin install a Pioneer DV-434 dvd player.

He will only be using interlaced output on his 43" (4:3) Toshiba RPTV (hd compatible).

He believes Svideo is better, I'm leaning towards component. We bought both last night from bestbuy (Monster 3), and both are still in their packaging.

Which is better for interlace video quality, and why? Are there strengths and weaknesses for each?

Component is better because it splits the video signal three ways instead of two for S-Video. BTW, with a HD-comp TV why not feed it a progressive signal?

Hook 'em both up and A/B 'em (you can still take the S-Video back to Best Buy). Some people say there is only a minor difference between the two, but I found a MAJOR upgrade using component: all colors much truer (especially greens and blacks), much more separation.

I'm with Skar on this. I had a Tosh 2109 that looked great on my 36" XBR400, but Santa brought me a Tosh 3750 for Christmas, and I definitely see an improvement. I also use the Componoent inputs as oppssed to S-Video. The colors are more natural, very distinct.

Thanks for the input. We did end up hooking both svideo and component up. The differences were subtle, but we both agreed that the component feed looked a bit richer and distinct. (we demo'd The Fifth Element Superbit). So component won out this time.

The reason he didn't feed a progressive signal is because the DV-434 has a horrible line doubler and progressive actually looks much worse that interlace.... everything is blurry and you can actually see words and captions jitter. Bottom line is that this player is not a true progressive player (no 3:2 pulldown). He knew that before he bought it (for just over $100)

Ah, I remember that player. Well, keeping your connection component will enable you to watch turn progressive video back on once you get another player, as s-video does not pass progressive video signal.
