You will only get black bars on a 16:9 TV with 2.35:1 movies, not 1.85:1 movies.

That's kind of an odd thing to say. Sure, most 1.85:1 films will show no letterboxing on a 16:9 display if they are anamorphically enhanced as they were matted to 1.78:1 or overscan obscures it... But you will most certainly have black (or gray) letterboxing/windowboxing with any number of ARs on anamorphically enhanced DVDs, including 1.33; 1.37; 1.66; 2.20; ~2.39; and 2.76:1, to name current releases. And any others, of course.
