Panasonic CT-34WX50 (16:9 Tube)
Need to know some things about this set, as I'm interested in purchasing one.
Currently, I have a Sony Wega XBR 36 inch from 2 years ago.
Here are my questions:
1. Are the 'zoom' modes available on this set good at stretching the average 4:3 image to fit the 16:9 frame?
My viewing time is split 50/50 between dvd's and 4:3 cable (DirecTv), so that's why I ask.
2. Is the 'image area' on the Pan (16:9) 34 inch set comparable to the 'image area' on my Sony 36 inch?
Specifically, a film that's 1:85x1... will the 1:85x1 image on my Sony be smaller or bigger on the Panasonic. Seeing as how 16:9 is quite different from 4:3. Also, the same question can be posed for 2:35x1 films...
3. Lastly...what about stretching or 'zooming' on films that are NON-anamorphic transfers on dvd... to fit the screen... is the picture degraded 'alot'?
Thanks for any and all help... I would love the input of someone that owns one that has DirecTv and also watches alot of films...anamorphic and NON-anamorphic...and for that matter pre-1952 films in 1:37x1.
Sorry for all the questions, again any info is gratefully appreiciated.

I have the set and direcTV. My wife and I watch in in auto stretch mode all the time.. The only time I noticed anything a little weird was with the news ticker on CNN where the lettering size changes slightly as the words move from edge to/from center. We don't mind it and love the set
#2 is a mathematical calculation. The screen is wider than your Sony XBR I am pretty sure. The widescreen image without the bars should be bigger than the one between the bars on your sony. I am sure the bars aren't infinitessimal as I also have a Sony VVega. The panny is definitely an uptrade.
#3 I never 'zoom' a movie. I don't have many pan and scan movies, so stretching is rare. Haven't checked that out yet.
p.s. I love the set and got a great deal on it.. You should be able to get more than 20% off list....I got just under 25% off
The panny is a great set and we love it. Have had it 3 months (got directv at the same time). Note: it doesn't do 720p.. it converts to the 1080i
