Hardware reliability of digital video recorders (esp. Philips HDR312)?

Has anyone had a problem with their DVR, hardware-wise? I was about to jump on an online deal on a Philips HDR312 (30-hr TiVo unit) when I read some poor reviews on www.audioreview.com by some people whose units conked out after warranty, causing them to drop another $100 to get them fixed. I'm wondering if this is the exception or the norm.

TiVo good?
