From jvc's website: a primer on flashing the EPROM.
I have an old XV-701, and have had to do the similar procedure a few times. (knock on wood)
Hopefully this works for you.
My DVD player is not playing some DVDs, Do I need service?
It is possible that your particular disc is bad or that the software title has a problem. There is also a chance that the player may need to be reset. Try the following procedure:
1.Unplug the unit from the AC source.
2.While pressing both the "STOP" and "PLAY" keys together, plug the AC cord back into the outlet.
3.Continue pressing the keys until "TEST JC" appears on the flourescent display.
4.Press the "F. SKIP" key followed by the "PAUSE" key.
5.Confirm that the DVD AUDIO blue indicator lights up after several seconds.
6.Unplug power cord from AC source.
7.If your DVD player continues to malfunction, we recommend that you have the unit examined by a JVC Factory or Authorized Service Facility.

Recently I experienced a problem with my 723 resulting in the player not being able to read certain titles. I contacted JVC customer service and I was told the unit needed a software upgrade. JVC said they would pay for the upgrade all I had to do was ship the unit to their service center. I sent the unit for repair and since it was returned it works perfect. I suggest you call JVC 800-252-5722 and describe the units problems and take their advise.
