Sony VVega and the anamorphic "squeeze"

Okay, so I helped my brother set up his home theatre system. He has a Sony VVega 27" square television and a complete Sony DVD/receiver package (sorry, but I don't have any of the ideas/serial numbers). Anyway, everything looks great and sounds even better. However, last night I discovered his TV has the 16:9 enhanced mode. I turned it on, and the image quality improved dramatically. However, the image became "sqeezed." In other words, the height was reduced, giving the image a "smashed" look....not to dramatic, but bad enough.

So, is this normal? If not, how did we set it up wrong? Do I have to go into the DVD menu and the TV menu to set it up, or did we wire it wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.
