If you do not have any source of digital signal, eg. cable company is a couple of years away, satellite not an option, etc., is it worth the extra $ to get an HDTV compatable set now....will it improve an analog signal to any great degree? Thanks, John.

For DVD's the answer is YES and remember you can get a DISH 6000 player with an OTA module and get FREE HDTV from your local outside VHF/UHF antenna. You get 16x9 for dvds and OTA local channels. CBS has the most HDTV programming now and more is coming.

An HDTV has an internal line doubler that improves the image from any source (IMO and I don't own a HDTV). It will also accept a 480p signal from a progressive scan DVD player which will look much better.

If you watch DVDs, it is worth it. I got mine for the primary purpose of watching DVDs. Watching HDTV was kinda secondary, since there isn't much available anyhow.
If your local stations broadcast digitally, you may only need a good outdoor antenna to receive the signal. The best part is, that signal is free! I love having no cable/satellite bill, but yet get a great picture.

You will find that friends will drop by more often. We also found that the best way to get the local signal is through a simple antenna.
Figure out your viewing habits and buy according to what you will be using your set for..

keep spreading the 16x9 message everyone. We need all the new people we can get to see the difference so that Warner and others quit releasing Full Frame pan and scan crap.
I hear today you can get SOTL on dvd in both Full Frame and Widescreen. At least we have an option but if their sales of Pan and Scam goes up they might quit releasing the widescreen like Warner is doing.
