Question about HDCD

My Toshiba DVD player plays HDCD. Now does HDCD also require special decoding by the reciever or is just the player neccessary to decode HDCD's? I ask because I have seen some Harmon Kardon receivers that boast onboard HDCD and I always thought that only the CD player or DVD player had to have it. Any help or referal would be appreciated.

If your receiver does not have HDCD decoding the you would use your analog outs on your DVD/CD player that decodes the signal. If your receiver does have HDCD decoding you can use your digital out.

Pale is correct. I used to have my Toshiba 3109 connected to the CD input of my Yamaha receiver via high quality RCA cables, in addition to the toslink digital going into the DVD input of the Yamaha.

I've since bought a Denon DCM-370 (hdcd) and now have it connected the same way (RCA cables).

This is required to get the hdcd decoding, unless, as you mentioned, the receiver can decode it for you. One thing about the Denon is that it has the dual 20 bit Burr Brown A/D converters. It's sweet.
