Widescreen TV show question

The old movies that are shown on Turner Classics and other networks which are shown in widescreen, will these movies be displayed correctly on a 16X9 TV?

Just curious

I guess if you can zoom them to the correct size they will. Otherwise they're still 4:3 letterboxed.

The only thing that automatically fills up an HDTV (16x9) is an anamorphic dvd or a 16x9 HD program. I can make a regular letterboxed show fill the screen by chopping the top & bottom off and "blowing up" the remaining 16x9 picture. Generally speaking, the resolution of regular television doesn't look very good blown up- at least not on a 65" HDTV.
