I have the Panasonic LV-50 and am looking for better headphones for it. I have some 20 dollar ones that i've been using-but on flights, it's sometimes hard to hear the movie over the jet engine noise. So basically I'm looking for ones with good noise supression (w/o looking like I'm wearing oversized earmuffs) and overall sound. Compatability with DTS wouldn't hurt either since the player is capable of that. Also, where can I get a good price on them? Thanks!

supporting DTS isn't an issue, because when you use headphones the sound is downmixed to stereo. Dolby digital was designed with downmixing in mind, dts wasn't, so when using headphones always go with the DD track.

I have the sony in-your-ear ones, I think the mdr nc10, or something like that. I LOVE THEM. They work fantastically on the plane, really reduce the background plane noise.

I have a pair of Aiwa HP-X222 Headphones, only $30 at best buy.

I think they are really good sounding, and get alot louder than most headphones. They are the best in the price range I wanted to spend at least. I am sure you can get better for around $100

Without question: Bose Quiet Comfort Headset!!!


They use noise cancellation technology to cancel out exterior noise! The display that is in the factory stores uses a digital recording of the jet engine noise from the business class section of a 767 as external noise, while you listen to someone talking through the headhones. Remove the headphones & the jet engine noise is LOUD. Put the headphones back on & voila... NO jet engine noise!!! Just the person talking & it's crystal clear! I wish I had a set!

without knowing more of your preferences and the output of the unit you have, it's hard to recommend a set of headphones. I use the Beyerdynamics DT250-80 and really love their performance and sound muffling.

try HeadPhone for some neutral reviews and decent pricing.

ps I've listened to my 250's with a headphone amplifier and there is a difference. Depends on your wallet and situation, as to whether the difference is enough. The amplifier is high on my wish list.

I have a pair of the Sony NC-20's (the step up model from the ones you originally linked). They are fantastic. The noise suppression is so worth the $150 price tag. Sound quality of the NC-20's is also significantly improved over the other model, which have a high frequency response cut off of 14kHz.

I haven't heard them myself, but they do look promising. Still pretty expensive, but at least its under $100.

If you want some great sounding headphones with noise suppresion then you want the etymotic er-4. It is basically an in ear headphone which has built in ear plugs. It is widely regarded as one of the best headphones period.

It comes in two versions, an s model for home use and a p model for portable use. The s has a flatter freq. response while the p model has an exagerated bass response and is more suitable for the weaker output of many portable devices.

It can be had for about $225 at sagearts.com or $270 at headphone.com (retail for $330).

I haven't personally used them, but according to users on the headwize forums they are much better at blocking jet engine noise then noise cancelling headphones, plus their soundquality is much better.
