I managed to pick up an open-box Sony STR-DE845 at my local WIZ for $200 - looked it over, not a thing wronbg with it. Yo make a long story short, it sounds crisp and clear overall, and the DTS is very nice...but cd-audio and music in general lacks that bass punch. In looking over some reviews, some people have mentioned it wasn't all that bassy, but my old Sony Pro-Logic made the walls shake! This one has the power, but not the range it seems. Anyone else experience this? I'm about to take it back (have 30 days hehe) but it would be the first time I ever brough back a component to the shop. Can anyone else recommend a "bassier" (for lack of a better word) receiver? This one would be sweet if it just went deeper and had more punch....

I have had mine since Christmas. I really haven't had any complaints, and overall am pleased with it (other then hating the remote). I have some OLD KEF 103.2's as my main speakers. Being British speakers they are not known for their bass. But the Sony seems to drive them fine. The bass is fairly tight and quick.
I had it narrowed down to this and a Denon unit. I liked the Denon unit better, but it was over TWICE the price. Decided to go Sony and buy more DVD's.

I have a STR-DE545 that does quite well with the CD audio. I haven't experienced any problems, lots of Bass.
I am thinking about purchasing the V333ES model or the new STR-DE1075. Just can't make myself spend the extra money right now.

I have a 545 also and i noticed in general the CD audio isn't as good as other receivers. I have a kenwood receiver also, i can't recall the model number, but it handles the cd audio much better. (though the dvd sounds isn't as good.)

I used to own the 835 and recently upgraded to a Denon and was blown away by the difference in bass. The DE series is well regarded as the crap line from Sony, and I used to not belive that....until I took a chance on another receiver. At the least, try and get a Sony DB if you cant afford much else.

Sorry to hear you feel that way. Those budget receives usually don't give too much 'bang'. My 555 ES is quite nice....maybe you should consider upgrading to the DB or ES line?

Ok, it seems i was a bit foolish when I bought the receiver...Being that it was an open-box 9and I hadn't gone there in hopes of buying a receiver - went there to pick up a CD actually), when the sales rep suggested a subwoffer (which I didn't have), I declined, feeling as he was "pressuring" me....after making a few calls, I discovered that the receiver indeed needs a subwoffer in order to get that "punch" I was looking for. As of this posting, I ran out to my local Best Buy (where my friend informed me of a nice special) and picked up a Sony sun (100W active). I am now quite the happy camper, to say the least. Sorry for posting in haste - this is all new ground for me, and we all make mistakes I suppose. I do really appreciate the responses from all - I did a lot of my research here in my hunt to be honest, and many recommended Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer, and even the Sony ES series - but based on my budget (and lets face it - an open box unit going for essentially half-price) I couldn't pass it up. After hooking up the sub, tweaking everything, and basically running it through the mill, I can say (barring any future malfunctions this unit might encounter), I am quite pleased with its performance. The manual did note that if a sub-woofer was not going to be used to be sure to note that in the SETUP function of the receiver, thus pushing the bass through the front speakers, but I didn't realize it would be so low - now with the sub, it surpasses what I initially had in my old receiver. Its going to be a Blockbuster weekend for be, rest assured!
Again, my thanks to all - and forgive my "post in haste".
