I'm becoming very discouraged with my 27 Sony Wega TV. When I first bought it I had to return it for the antenna hookup wasn't working. I couldn't get a picture and I tried everything. I returned it and the store confirmed this and the replaced the TV

Now 9 months later when I watch a DVD or watch TV a slight humming/whistling sound is being made. This doesn't happen all of the time but most of the time. It is a light noise.

I called Sony they told me to put it on mute. No luck the noise is still there. I put it on video 2,3,4 no humming at all. I pulled the antenna off. Humming still there. The only time when it doesn't hum is when its not in DVD or TV mode.

I bought my TV last September and I didn't get an extended warranty. The warranty is 90 days. Sony tells me I need to get it serviced.

Does anyone know what's the cause of this. Is there something that can be done to fix this myself. Please advise. Thanks

Are you using a SurgeProtector or Power strip that could be creating noise in your AC current. Try plugging it directly onto the wall if so. Also try disconnecting all components and try 1 at a time to see if maybe one of them is producing feedback.

Is it a very high pitched whistling noise? I mean almost inaudable or is it a lower buzzing?

KnightSkywalker: Its not to loud but its definitely noticeable to my ear. For the past week its been making this noise most of time. I have to crank my sound up so that I don't hear this low pitch excruciating to the ear sound.

My ex girlfriend had a big screen in her basement that let out a high pitch. What is wierd is that if you adjusted the contrast/picture and dropped it down the pitch would go away.

Not much consolation. Do you have really good ears, this may sound wierd but I have good ears and I pick up high pitches from electronics and such all the time. I used to hear a high pitch that a lamp let out once, people thought I was crazy, but thats another story.

I have this problem to, though with a 20-inch Samsung. I only notice it when I am playing a video game or watching a DVD, because I run the video monitor into the TV from my receiver. However, if I mute the TV, it's gone.

BUT -- let's say I have the receiver on and am watching TV, then I get the hum. So, at least for me, it seems to be a receiver/video monitor cable problem.

Maybe this will help.

Guys thanks for the input I've tried all of that and everything under the sun. Unfortunately the sound is still there.

KnightSkywalker I take your situation very serious about hearing frequencies no-one else seems to notice. I was hit by a drink driver from the side about four years ago. Since then the super high frequency pitch sm8680 is speaking of sounds about as lound as a jet engine to me. I did not watch tv for about two years after the accident.

sm8680 I'm kind of sorry to tell you this but I have noticed that Sony televisions are prone to this sound. I don't think it is that anything is wrong with the set but I have experinced this noise with my mother's 27" trinitron, and a few other friends Sony's.

Being ultra sensitive to this noise I have noticed that this high frequency hum appears to be worse in Sony televisions versus other brands.

My girlfriend's parents 35" Sony also makes this same high pitched noise. It is definitely tube related. The only solution I have found to remedy it slightly is to go up to the TV and smack it on the side.

Sometimes the noise goes away for awhile oter times just for a few seconds. It really can get highly irritating especially if you notice the sound and center your hearing around it. It seems wide spread on Sony's... maybe they need to issue a recall or at least look into the problem.

Well its not a bad situation, I just have really good hearing. I just notice little things that other people don't. Helps me cause I work in radio (just starting out) and I can nail peoples inflections pretty easily. Sometimes I don't notice when I am doing it.

Technician came by yesterday said that I have a bad yoke. The visit costs $69.99 which can be applied to the repair bill. The yoke is free under warranty. But to put a yoke in it costs $200. Does this seem reasonable guys?

If you have a warranty...shouldn't it be free? Are you using an offical "Sony Authorized" Repair guy?

The sony warranty is 90 days labor 1 year parts and 2 years on the picture tube. The yok is on the back of the picture tube I don't think thats the picture tube per say. YesI'm using an official sony repair company in fact they put me in touch with these guys.
