I just recently purchased my 27" Sony Wega and have a question about the 16x9 enhanced mode. I have a Toshiba sd-2109 dvd player hooked up to the Wega with component cables. To properly use the 16x9 enhanced mode on my tv , do i switch the picture mode on my dvd player to the 16x9 mode. For the last two weeks i've been watching movies using the 4/3 mode on the dvd player and the 16x9 enhanced mode on the Wega. Is this wrong?

Yes, your TV looks like a 16x9 to the DVD player when you are in enhanced mode. So you should set the player to 16x9 mode.

Thanks for the fast response. I was wondering why my picture was extremely small when i put on the 16x9 enhanced mode. I just tried it the right way and it makes a big difference in the picture size. Thanks again..

Yep. Had the same experience with the same set.

I would have done the same thing too, but I posted here about that question before I bought it.

Copied from my response in another thread.

Something I figured out about the 16:9 feature that I did not see in the manual. You need to set your DVD player video ouput for a 16:9 TV. If you do not do this, it can distort the picture. If you have it setup correctly, an Anamorphic DVD should fill the screen (no black strips top or bottom) before you enable the 16:9 feature.

One other thing, you can use the SAT/CABLE button on the remote to control your DVD player. At least for a Toshiba. I used the VTR/DVD for my VCR.

I know I`m a little slow but whats the difference on the Wega screen that a normal TV doesn`t do without an enhanced mode?
Does the black bars dissapear or is it just a better picture or what?

It's just a better picture. Normal tv's downconvert anamorphic movies by removing every 4th line or so. The Wega in enhanced mode squeezes each line a little instead of deleteing lines, which gives you much better resolution resulting in a clearer picture. In addition the Wega is a flat screen, which makes things look better, and cuts down on glare, and the set has great colors. The Wega's have a better picture than most tv's even without the 16x9 enhancement IMO.

I have one of the first Wegas that came out. It is the KV-36FV1. Does anyone know if it has the 16:9 enhancement. The manual that came with it is about 10 pages long (not much info.)

This is only true for films with a 1.85:1 or 1.78:1 aspect ratio. films with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio will still have small black bars at top/bottom

Hadn't watched a DVD with the 2.35:1 aspect ratio, but you are correct. Just watched Mummy Ultimate Ed. which is 2.35:1 and the black bars are still there before the enhancement.

No, it does not. That feature was not added until later models.

Maybe it can be done in the service menu which is a hassle.
