I am looking to purchase my first DVD player and then add 5 speaker capabilities later. (limited budget). I see that I can purchase DVD players with decoders, buy separate decoders, or by a reciever with a decoder. I would like to get both 5.1 and DTS. What is the prefered piece of hardware to have the decoding function occur?

Do I spend a little more know to get the decoder as part of the player or save my money and get the decoder when I buy a reciever?

Thanks

Yes, I agree the decoder should be in the receiver.

Usually more simple plus a LOT LESS wires!!!
If your decoder decodes and you only buy a digital "ready" receiver (they even still making these?) you'll need 6 seperate wires going from the dvd player to the receiver JUST for the AUDIO!

Yes. I also agree.
DTS/DD receivers can be found for under $500.

There are many good quality receivers with both DD and DTS for under $500. Go the receiver route.

Also, if you have other digital devices (PS2, MD, LD, CD, SAT, etc.) you can connect them to the receiver. With a decoder built-in the DVD player, you only get DD/DTS from DVDs.

This all presupposes that you are not using separates...

If I assume you're using a receiver then I definitely recommend having the decoder in the receiver.
