First look at this price for the jvc Model: XVD723GD: straight off the jvc website
http://jvc.com/product.jsp?productId=PRD2000000
then look at the price from best buy
http://www.bestbuy.com/Detail.asp?m=...at=&e=11031737
Is Bestbuy pricing this way too low( possible misprint?) or is Jvc seriously inflating their prices on their web site?
the player looks great, built in DD and DTS processors, progressive scan component inputs, digital zoom, plus it has the ability to play first gen HDCD's (if they ever release any)

They are not "seriously inflating their prices on their web site" - they are seriously inflating their MSRP, which the site clearly states the price is. That does seem like a rather wide spread. Lesson: MSRP is irrelevant.

many manufacturers (especially the Japanese) inflate their MSRP so stores can offer deep discounts; thus tricking consumer into believing they are getting a great deal. IMO if a $1000 piece of equipment routinely sells for $450, it's a $450 whatever and should be compared to other items in the same price range.
a lot of people tend not to shop local hi-fi stores that sell equipment that is either not discounted or only slightly discounted; their rational being i can get a $2000 thingamabob from Best Buy for only $699 and the small shop won't deal much on a $2000 Lexicon. but rather than compare the $699 item to the $2000 Lexicon, they should compare comparably priced items from the small shop.
of course, YMMV.
