I'm thinking of getting a satellite system and I have no idea what to get. I'm leaning towards Dish Network because they're basic package is by far better than that of Direct TV which doesn't include Comedy Central. I want to be able to get some network feeds as well for teh simpsons and such, but I don't know what's up with that whole thing. I see that it's $4.99 extra for New York local channel feeds, can I get that even though I'm in Va or are there restrictions? This whole thing is pissing me off, but cable here has gone up to about $34-35 bucks a month and it sucks, terrible picture and everything. Any help woulid be appreciated.
Also, I hear of some kind of cards you can buy to get all the channels on your dish. What's the deal with these? Where/how do you get them? Should I bother or is it crap? Thanks again.

I've had Dish Network for four years and love it. Just if you looking to get into HDTV soon make sure you get a 6000 box now, cause it will be alot more to upgrade later.

I've had Dish Network for about two years now, and with recent rate increses, the price for the package I get (Top 100) is about $40 a month.
The cards you are referring to are called 'smart cards', and they are illegal.

Dish also has better entry level deals. It's
$28.99 +shipping for an entire 4900 system (DD DBS receiver, UHF remote, Dish 500 antenna, dual LNBF, self-installation kit):
http://www.dishusa.com/cgi-local/sho...e=sys4922.html
Requires 8month, min. $21/month commitment for first timer subscribers.
DishUSA is still giving out a $199 rebate in addition to the reduced price system packages for 1 year, $39.98/month commitments:
http://www.dishusa.com/cgi-local/sho...ge=rebate.html
W/the rebate that can work out to $40/month worth of programming for effectively $23.40/month.
DirecTV has better hardware (direct Tivo, Ultimate TV, ...) and better sports packages. Sometimes, there are directTV packages that require no minimum length of commitment (Roxy?).
HDTV from either diretcTV or Dish gets pretty pricey. Currently, you get one or two HD channels(HBO, Show) + a handful of PPV. Requires a different antenna and more expensive receivers.
