If anyone has one of these players and it won't play SVCDs I just spent some time finding a solution. The DVD-Rom needs the firmware upgraded. It has nothing to do with the eprom or any other internal part. The DVD-Rom can be upgraded by using a CDR and it only takes a few seconds. If you have never seen a SVCD its a huge difference from regular VCD and is the best way to save programs to disc. At least until DVD-R becomes more affordable.

Make sure to read the instructions carefully on the page. Its pretty straight forward. You open up your apex and see what version the firmware for your DVD-Rom is and then download the correct firmware. When flashing your drive with the CDR make sure to read the text file included with the download.

BTW the DVD playback quality now seems better as well. There seems to be less pixelation than before.

Just a word of warning to anyone doing this: If you pick the wrong upgrade, or you do not need the upgrade, you can hose the drive completely. You can get a irreperably dead drive.
