I was curious about this today, so I hooked up my old Admiral VCR to my TV and plugged my DVD player in the VCR. I noticed that while watching the DVD through the VCR the color shifted, and there were faint lines, but overall the picture was pretty watchable. I have always thought that there was some feature on the DVD player that made the picture scrambled when you tried to use it through your VCR. Why then, did my picture come out okay?
Also, I began recording and it was strange. When I viewed the film as it was being recorded it would cut in and out and get strange pixelation on the screen. However, when I watched it later on the recorded VHS tape the picture did not cut in and out. Could someone explain this to me? Thanks.

Certain VCRs react differently to Macrovision, where some get the overly distorted image and color shift others aren't affected by it at all. I think it's kind of hit or miss, but iir older model VCRs seem to be the least affected by it. Also, not all DVDs have Macrovision copy protection, as it is a licensed technology that the studio has to pay for and some simply don't (early Anchor Bay titles come to mind).
