Re: Columbia House Sale Offer Codes, Part VI

I think I may be up for a while now.

Only weird thing for me: I placed my first order on a $16.17 set and both the checkout and my e-mail invoice show a estimated sales tax of $2.39. That's almost 15%?!

Wonder if I'll get charged the correct amount when it goes through?

They seem to be charging tax on the total before the $15 coupon is applied.

Last time there was a code like this, I had the same problem. I emailed them and they acted like I wasn't supposed to use the code even though my only concern was the sales tax. Bottom line the sales tax ended up being right, but I don't know if it required any intervention or not. Target does this too. They estimate sales tax when ordering then charge the correct amount when they ship.

I just opened another account and it says I can start ordering. However there is nothing in order history and it says it won't show up for a few days. You think it's safe? -- because I want to fulfill with a 59.95 set and I don't want any problems.

BTW you can order a DVD that is less than 15 bucks and it will only charge shipping. I'm hoping I can use the $10 code ten times and the $15 code 10 times, but I haven't ordered my first 10 $15 items yet So we'll see.

That's what I thought, but it seemed high so I checked the math and it's way off.

I wouldn't feel too comfortable on calling about the sales tax error for this reason. Don't want to draw attention to a huge amount of orders using a code that was never meant for my account.

Hopefully it will correct itself as you mentioned.

The tax is calculated on your DVD total + shipping + the amount of the code (not minus the code). If you divide the tax by your tax %, you can get the total on which it was calculated and then figure it out that way.

Re: Columbia House Sale Offer Codes, Part VI

Thanks for the code, dada.

I just placed 2 orders with it. Remember, folks, clearance DVDs qualify.

Spoiler:
Order 1:
Cold Sweat $11.99
Licence to Kill [clearance] $5.23
-$15.00 +shipping = $7.20 (before tax)

Order 2:
A Dangerous Method DVD [Preorder] $19.95
-$15.00 +shipping = $7.94 (before tax)

Earlier in the day I got 6 bonus points & free shipping on the $5.23 clearance DVD Dolls (the Stuart Gordon film)

I was tempted to use this code to pre-order The Innkeepers too, but I want to make sure the more immediate transactions go through without a hitch.

FYI: An interesting title I found was Takashi Miike's Zebraman II's BD/DVD 3-disc combo for $18. Unfortunately, being a 3-disc combo, that upped the shipping to $6. Same issue with the Dragon Tattoo BD/DVD/Ultraviolet.

Re: Columbia House Sale Offer Codes, Part VI

Ordered (all Blu-ray):

The Cable Guy, Malcolm X (DigiBook), 30 Minutes or Less, The Adventures of Tintin (3D Combo Pack), and Bad Teacher (BD/DVD Combo Pack).

Used funds I had saved up in my Paypal account for all of these. I want to place more orders, but I don't know if I have the money in my bank right now to afford to use that as a method of payment.

Yes, most retailers do it that way, a coupon is considered a form of payment, so they base tax on the price before coupon. Also, CH calls it's shipping charge "shipping & processing", so it's considered a service and is taxable in states that tax services, AZ does.

Looks like it only takes 5 payments from PayPal as well.. even if you use a different CC or try to do bank draft..

It is not neccessarily up to the retailer. Many states require them to do it that way. The Jack Asses want to make sure they get as much of a cut as they can....

Re: Columbia House Sale Offer Codes, Part VI

Not a chance in hell these go through. With that being said, I ordered:

Hugo
Drive
J. Edgar
To Kill a Mockingbird
Malcolm X
All Quiet on the Western Front
Midnight in Paris
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Mission: Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol
Take Shelter
The Deer Hunter
The Nutty Professor
Parenthood
Dead Alive
Rebecca
Notorious
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
American Graffiti
American Pie
Somewhere

Not marking any of these off as "purchased," but fingers crossed. If this is legit, they must be going out of business and trying to get what they can get.

The $15 code was intended for members who spent at least $60 on orders in February. It wasn't meant for general usage and I would wager to guess that it was supposed to be redeemed just once.

Ahh, I see. Thanks for clearing that up, otherwise it is a very curious code to put out there.

There is a banner at the very top that has the 15 dollar promo on it, there isn't a code, but it does come right out and say that it's a promo. i imagine that if it were for certain customers that they wouldn't so prominently advertise it.

You can always do the 6 dvd's with 1 more at 10 with only 2 to buy later for 12 bucks. The savings you will get from this code will make that easily.

The banner on my account doesn't show until the code is entered. I don't think they would knowingly create a deal like this that worked for Blu-ray. They would more likely be able to offer this deal on DVD only.

Well, CH isn't a newbie at this. The codes for a free DVD with $19.95 purchase are intended for those who made a $19.95 or more purchase in the previous month, yet the codes are regularly posted on forums and never rejected. I saw the $15 off banner and clicked it and it added the code & discount to my cart, and then when I completed an order and added another title to my cart it was still there. I only made 6 purchases, and only 2 of those free with shipping only, and then used it for titles like Casablanca 70th Anniversary that was still $23.99 + shipping after the discount, and that was my 40th order on my account - so I will be highly pissed if they cancel that.

That's exactly what I did and right after I joined I was able to get in on this deal. Got in 5 orders.

What happens if this was a mistake, does CH just send out an email saying they made an error with the huge banner that said 15 dollars off any purchase?
