BTW, a comment on DVD Beaver's description of "the grain" in Casalanca:

Last October, I went & saw Casablanca in a local theater that was doing a classics series. At the time, I believed i was seeing a digital version, rather than a true film print (see this thread: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/archive/t-595488.html )

I later found out i was correct, that theater is digital only.

The thing i find interesting, is while I have no knowledge of which version they were showing, & at what bit rate; part of what upset me was the grain; & at the time I believed that the grain was a digital artifact, NOT from an accurate reproduction.

Not totally sure how that plays into this new release, but be warned; between DVD Beaver's screen caps & what I saw, this "upgrade" MAY in actuality be a downgrade!

it's a bit frustrating as there are so many "remastered/expanded"versions out there. At least I didn't buy the first Blu edition!

M4, I saw the film last week as part of a one day showing celebrating it's 70th Anniversary (put on in part by TCM) And I was not real happy with the "grain" I was seeing on Ingrid's face. Just looked like, I don't know, tiny dots in movement? Just odd... during the nighttime scenes and when her face wasn't flooded with light, it didn't bother me all that much. But, I didn't feel like it was some amazing improvement. Heck, the interminable ads for broadway shows before the film looked TERRIBLE! Very blurry, full of artifacts when the cameras moved.(the 30 people that bothered to see Casablanca that night I am sure felt as compelled as I was to fly from Atlanta to see those plays, they sure know what people that see Casablanca love! ;) )

John, just click on the link in Post #8, and scoll down the page a bit...they mention all the extras.

FYI - and not the only great review .... picking up Target 1-disc version tomorrow as I never got around to picking up the previous release. Glad to see DNR has been reduced since the last version was released.

Many of you will be ecstatic to hear that Warner have left well enough alone this time around in regards to digital noise reduction, and all the detail and grain that are inherent to the source have been flawlessly preserved. Owning the original 2008 release myself, I was able to A/B it with the 70th Anniversary transfer, and the difference is remarkable - Skin texturing used to look waxy, but now? There's a fair abundance of skin texturing, while hair and clothing get a noticeable boost as well during close-up shots. Edges are most definitely sharper all around, and there's not a single trace of edge enhancement to be seen. Not only that, but the wafts of smoke that are often seen in Rick's cafe do not reveal any sort of digital noise or banding. The encode here is truly pristine.

Yes, the Blu-Ray extras. Sorry, not interested.

I'm looking for the extras (if any) for 2012 DVD re-release which appears to be a Target exclusive.

Back.

Yes, the DVD is in fact an exclusive and has the two new documentaries from the box set.

I have it.

Well, when I made the above post I didn't - long stupid story. I was in a crunch for time.

If you have either the 2008 box set or the 2003 two disc, special edition - keep it. This exclusive is an addition.

Extras that carried over:
Introduction By Lauren Bacall
Commentary by Roger Ebert
Commentary by Rudy Behlmer
Trailers

New items:
"Michael Curtiz: The Greatest Director You Never Heard Of" (37:17 minutes)
"Casablanca: An Unlikely Classic" (34:54 minutes)

If you want all of the bonuses, you must keep the older release or releases (should you want). I have both.

The '08 box has the complete extras (and more) from the '03 DVD, but with all the physical bonuses and laser cut slipcover it can become damaged with repeated openings. So I kept my two disc version for easy access. I'm now thinking about getting rid of that and replacing it with this store exclusive; single disc, remastered with new extras.

Not bad, I'm satisfied. I was bummed when I found out that this was getting re-released with new content for Blu-Ray - what about DVD? This fills in that gap. Very sway.

Sounds like i need to decide whether to get the Target DVD, Target 1 disc blu, or haunt Ross until I see the old blu-ray again there. I want the new extras, but I personally do not like the grain.

of course Ross had a ton of the the last BR edition when I didn't have a BR player!

Does anyone own both the new Target Casablanca DVD & the last gen dvd (not Blu)? If so, any chance of a picture quality mini review?

I was in Target last night. The 4-movie sets were on sale. The $9.99 MGM/WB ones were $8.99, and Universal's "Dark Comedy" 4 Movie Marathon was $4.50.

HUGE WARNING on the Casablanca Blu-ray: If like me you have an old 4:3 CRT, for unknown reason the movie on the BR only fills up about 80% of the screen. The aspect ratio is correct; it's shrunk on all 4 sides.

The extras do NOT have this issue.

I am NOT pleased.
