4.99 Paramount bin at BestBuy with double & triple features

Saw a cardboard display by the front door with lots of Paramount titles, here's what I remember:

Nicholas Cage triple feature (Face Off/ Snake Eyes/ World trade Center)
John Travolta triple feature (Domestic Disturbance/General's Daughter/ Face Off)
Edge of Your Seat Collection (Kiss the Girls/Along Came a Spider/Double Jeopardy)
Death Wish / Escape From Alcatraz / Uncommon Valor (Triple Feature)
Drillbit Taylor/A Night at the Roxbury/Dickie Roberts (Triple Feature)
Tropic Thunder/Envy/Black Sheep (Triple Feature)
Airplane (double feature)
The Shootist
Runaway Bride
Escape From L.A.

In addition to the 2 disc Star Trek, I found several copies of the Criterion 2 disc edition of 'The Curious case of Benjamin Button' in the same bin, marked $4.99

I can confirm these were available at a Best Buy in New York. I saw everything mentioned above in a barrel.

Also saw The Island for $4.99 in the barrel.

If Paramount has all this stuff in a dump bin for 5 bucks, be ready for it to go out of print soon.

Found all of the above (except The Island) in Beaumont, TX including Benjamin Button criterion and Star Trek 2-disc. Also purchased Airplane double feature. Didn't buy but also saw G.I. Joe 2 disc and patriot games triple feature.

Thanks for original post, SurfinHawk!

Re: 4.99 Paramount bin at BestBuy with double & triple features

Saw all the double & triple features plus the single titles that were mentioned. All are from Paramount.

Picked up the 2 disc Criterion Benjamin Button for $4.99

They were located on the main aisle in a small cardboard dump style bin. At first I walked right by it. Guess I'm used to the old huge dump bins at Walmart!

Thanks Surfinhank!

No, but it is the name of a 7 minute short film. http://www.imdb.com/video/wab/vi1105658137/

(And, no, I wasn't aware of this until I searched "Zilch" on IMDB 3 minutes ago)

if it don't sell individually, take all unsold copies, put them into a collection so they can get you with the psychological notion of 'getting more for the money'. there are plenty of people that will lap this one up thinking 'wow !!! 3 movies for buck 5...am SO in'....heck, I was that way myself when I picked this set up and put it back after seeing one particular title in it...any prizes for guessing, which one ? :-)

I had a high school buddy whose alcoholic mother loved that movie. She was begging us to help her access the bonus features. (It's a very odd memory)

Yes the bin is still around. I've been to 2 stores in the last 24 hours and both stores had the bins still filled with the double and triple features. Saw the Jack Ryan set at both stores. These DVDs don't seem to be selling or they keep replenishing the bins with stock from the backroom. Maybe in this weak economy, $4.99 is too high for these titles?

A co-worker bought the Jack Ryan triple feature and each movie is on a single sided disc. (3 discs total) He is very happy with the triple feature, it's only $1.66 per movie!

probably depends on the region. Here in 3 Socal stores, haven't seen the Jack Ryan set. TOns of those Travolta Nic Cage sets. Also saw another store with a boatload of 'Tropic Thunder/Envy/Black Sheep' sets.

Paramount must be desperate to sell their factory-sized surplus of Envy.

The Jack Ryan DVDs have been around for so long and so cheap, everyone who buys DVDs probably already has them which could be why they don't sell at $4.99. I'm surprised to hear the triple pack is 3 DVD-5s. The old DVDs I still have are DVD-9s, so unless this is an older release I forgot about (maybe their first pressing... which I wonder if they were 16x9) then Paramount must've stripped off the extras to do DVD-5s. I never heard exact figures but I thought nowadays the difference in production costs between a DVD-5 and DVD-9 isn't that great (less than a dollar), so I can't imagine anyone repressing just for that. It would've made more sense to do a DVD-14 and put all 3 movies on 1 disc.

I took a look at the back cover of the set before he bought it. All three movies are anamorphic widescreen, all three had both DTS surround and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, behind the scenes interviews with the cast, etc. One movie, don't remember which one, also had a director's commentary track. I think the set of 3 discs are all DVD-9's.

My guess is that Paramount had a ton of unsold single movie discs and decided to repackage the 3 movie discs that were originally destined to be sold individually into a triple feature rather than send them to the landfill...

I think Paramount is just trying to squeeze a few more $$$ out of existing inventory.

Re: 4.99 Paramount bin at BestBuy with double & triple features

Hit the local BB tonight. In addition to 2 $4.99 dvd bins (nothing much of interest), they had a $4.99 cd bin of mostly Universal & Sony titles that would have been of interest if I didn't already have everything in the bin I liked! Nothing rare, but lowered prices. 1 example: Journey Captured @ $4.99.

There also was a $7.99 Blu bin I didn't look through as i don't yet have a blu player.
