Don't know if it means a thing, but the new add is showing $3 dvd's. No new titles, though (Hairspray, Snakes On A Plane, Rocky & Bullwinkle, etc).

Hey, RMW, not much turning up here in the LA BLs, just a few titles here and there. I've even made a new local DVD Talk friend and fellow BL striker (ha!), but even with both of us out there scoping, we don't find much.

I have to wonder if part of the problem may be that the stores here are turning down new stock because they are still so overloaded with crap that is months old. You should see how many of those $6 Nickelodeon sets are left here, rotting like bad cheese in an overflowing sewer filled with badly digested jalapenos from J-Lo's butt.

I've heard some talk from my BL contacts that getting stuck with a lot of dead inventory & the corporate dvd buyers overspending their budget had a large role in this. One of my sources thought that shipments would start picking up right around now, after BL finished taking inventory, though.

My personal opinion is (also based on what I'm seeing at places like oldies.com, 1/2 Price Books, supermarkets, Grocery Outlet, Best Buy, etc & some personal sources) that other companies are willing to pay more for the same titles than what BL is paying & the studios likely want to get more for these inventory dumps, though what BL has going for them is the large quantity purchases they make.

I suspect that lack of quality inventory at BL this year is a combination of the last 2 paragraphs.

I saw some new Lions Gate and MGM titles. You would think it was October since it was mostly horror. Some MGM Midnite Movies Double features, After Dark Horrorfest and Ghost House Underground titles. Also saw Prom Night 2, Amityville 3, Highlander Director's Cut and many other unknown horror movies. Most of them rang up as "Fox June Ad Tray." All were $3 each.

Nothing at Pearl Tacoma Wa this week & Kent has already been told nothing for them next week. Kent did have (my first siting) of the Bing Crosby box, if anyone in the area wants it. They had 2 copies left.

Re: Big Lots Part 9 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

I made my first foray to Big Lots since January today, and I wasn't disappointed. Here was my haul:

$3 titles

Laguna Beach: The Complete First Season
Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II
The Pink Panther and Friends Collection, Volume 6: The Inspector
Dead Like Me: Life After Death
Mrs. Miniver
The Great Ziegfeld
Away We Go
The Brown Bunny
Men With Guns
True Stories
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)
Pufnstuf (Feature film)
Gable and Lombard
Alex Borstein: Drop Dead Gorgeous in a Down-to-Earth…
The Strange One
Red Rock West
Oliver! (with CD soundtrack)

$6 titles

Arrested Development, Season 1
Six Feet Under, Season 4

The Big Lots that I went to (which is an hour's drive from my town) had a LOT of stock. The $6 Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery television season sets had been decimated, but there were still several copies of Get Smart--Season 4, Six Feet Under--Season 4, and The Shield--Season 5. There were still 2 or 3 sealed sets of The Untouchables (Season 2, Volume 1 IIRC), and about 20 Twin Peaks--Season 2.

There were several more discs that I could have picked up, but close to $70 at one whack was plenty for me, thanks.

Interesting pricing changes from Big Lots. Saw some triple features today I had purchased back in 2009 for $3. They are now $9 !!! Many of the regular $3 flicks (e.g The Good Shepherd) are now $5. And then I saw 'Surface - the complete series' that was previously $8 and is now $5....they seem to playing at the pricing

I've seen Exosquad S1 for $8, then $5, then $3. Mind of Mencia was $10, then $3. Lipstick Jungle S1 was $5, then $3. I'm sure there are multitudes of examples.

For the most part I refuse to pay more than $3 for any movie and $6 for any TV set at Big Lots.

Picked up some Mod Squad and Dave's World S1 that I had passed on at $10, for $6. Did finally find a copy of Brown Bunny at BL (though I wasn't really looking for it). Never did find a copy of Who Killed the Electric Car, but hopefully it will show up again some time in the future. I am finding myself passing over more and more blind buys at Big Lots. Stuff I would've taken a chance on or at least taken home and checked out on IMDB to see if I wanted to keep it. I think the days of massive blind buys at Big Lots is over for me, at least for now.

Re: Big Lots Part 9 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

Was feeling a bit left out...even though the Fayetteville Ga Big lots has had tons of DVD's in stock, they were mostly filler stuff, very few older titles. The Riverdale GA store that has been barren for Months finally got some decent stock in a week or so ago, and now the Fayetteville store has gotten in Arabian Nights (Maria Montez) Trail of the Lonesome Pine(figured since it appears to be out of print and few Universal films run on TCM, better grab one when I finally saw it) Golden Boy, William Holden's debut(saw that a year or so ago at BL) Saw just 2 of Great Ziegfeld and Mrs Miniver, think 3 of the 4 were floaters.
The receipt said May Tray, or whatever it says...so either the stores didn't want to put them out til some other stuff sold, or they got their shipments late.
Oh, saw the Graduate SE as well. Just a single DVD though, don't know what's so special about it.

Also saw "What's the Matter with Helen?/Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?," but it was marked at $5. The other two were marked at $3. Big Lots' crazy pricing strategy strikes again.

Re: Big Lots Part 9 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

My BL gets in new titles every few weeks but it's been ages since they had anything remotely good. Haven't seen any of the good stuff people have mentioned - the Cooper, Brando, Crosby sets; Trail of the Lonesome Pine, Pufnstuf, Gable & Lombard, etc.

We've also never received any of the used tv season sets but I wonder if the managers just refused them or declined to put them out given those old "$5 used" dvds from a few years ago sat on the shelves forever and were about as popular as the JOEY set.

Re: Big Lots Part 9 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

They seem to have gotten a shipment of Fox and MGM titles, some of which have been already mentioned.

Had "The Graduate (SE)," "Big" (2-disc edition) and "Prizzi's Honor" in my hands from the Albany NY store but the woman in front of me must have had a solid 50 items in her cart so I gave up. I've live with or without them.

Saw 1931's "Cimarron" in the Pompano Beach Fl location last week...first time I've seen that at any BL in a long, long time.

Re: Big Lots Part 9 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

Yesterday at the Big Lots on E. Col. and Bumby ( Orlando ), I got...

"Gangster 4 film collectors set" $5.00 ( Echo Bridge ) - has the following movies:

The Last Days Of Frankie The Fly ( FULLscreen - Dennis Hopper - Daryl Hannah - Michael Madsen - Kiefer Sutherland )

The Funeral ( FULLscreen - Abel Ferrara - Christopher Walken - Chris Penn - Annabella Sciorra - Isabella Rossellini - Vincent Gallo - Benicio Del Toro - Gretchen Mol )... I think this would have made a great series on Showtime... like HBO's "Boardwalk Empire"....

The Immortals ( FULLscreen - Eric Roberts - Tony Curtis - William Forsythe - Joe Pantoliano - Tia Carrere )

Mean Johnny Barrows ( FULLscreen - Fred Williamson - Roddy McDowall - Stuart Whitman - Elliott Gould - Jenny Sherman )... I was a kid, the last time I saw this movie. It was part of a double featue with Bare Knuckes ( Robert Viharo - Sherry Jackson ). It's pure grindhouse fun. Unfortunately, this version has been butchered to FULLscreen. Sometimes characters will be talking to a person that's not visible or there's a shot of mostly empty space while people are speaking on the left and right sides... lol...

Also saw Bill & Ted double feature for $5.00

I watched this recently on one of those "urban adventure" 3-dvd sets that contained about 20 movies. Elliot Gould looks like he wandered in from another movie! I thought it was great, although it was also sloppily butchered with scenes ending suddenly and dialog being cut off in mid-sentence. Of course, I used to watch movies like this at the drive-in and they were the same way there. I'd buy a decent reissue of this.

Stopped at a BL in Zanesville, Ohio today and found a triple featue set of Sherlock Holmes movies for $5.
This MGM/Fox release contains the 1959 Hammer production of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee along with Billy Wilder's "Private Life of Sherlock Holmes".
The third film is "Without A Clue", a spoof with Michael Caine playing Holmes as a dunce and Ben Kingsley as Watson, the brains of the outfit. I've never seen this but have heard that it's pretty funny. "Clue" is full screen unfortunately but the other two are the widescreen versions.

WITHOUT A CLUE was shot 1.66:1, so it might look like a "wider" full screen.

Any new TV shows that have been spotted at Big Lots recently? Haven't been there in a month's time.

Re: Big Lots Part 9 - List your FINDS here (NO trades)

Just got back from the Big Lots on the corner of E. Col. and Bumby ( Orlando ). They just got more new titles...

I purchased the following....

Unforgiven ( 2 disc )... I hope this is not screwed-up like my "True Romance" 2 disc set. Disc 2 had the same content as disc 1... It was labeled corrrectly, but it just had the movie. I emailed Warner Bros, but they still have not answered me...

Also got "Number 23" UNrated... Hoping this copy won't freeze on me, like the last one did...

I also saw...

Defending Your Life ( Albert Brooks - Meryl Streep ) can NOT remember the price

Schindler's List - can NOT remember the price
