L'Appartment is a great film, and it beats its remake "Wicker Park" by miles.

The website indicates the release is region 1 only indicating an uncensored item; but with a retailer like B&N they're site might be inaccurate or it could be luck of the draw.

This is primarily a Lionsgate sale (and companies they bought out like Artisan, Republic, etc).

I picked up:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original) 7.50
Honor Among Thieves 4.99
Space Truckers 4.99

I recommend The Silent Partner ($4.99), an offbeat 70's Canadian "caper film" I recently discovered (w/ Elliot Gould in a shady performance & Christopher Plummer as one of the creepiest, sleaziest villains I've ever seen). It goes in all sorts of unpredictable directions. And despite being labeled as "Pan & Scan" it's actually in anamorphic widescreen, worked on the widescreen TV I watched it on.

I got the Deneuve set in and it had a pretty cool padded slip over cover. Are the other StudioCanal sets like that (Bardot or Loren)?

Noticed the Techine sold out.

I heartily second that SILENT PARTNER recommendation. This is great fun with definite re-watchability.

Ugh, had a lousy time today looking for a few titles in this sale. Went looking for the Godard, Hitchcock & Renoir sets at three different stores. Couldn't find a copy of the Godard in its slipcover, and the Hitchcock set I saw was beat all to hell, so I passed on both. The last store I went to actually had a copy of the Renoir box with no floaters (which seems to be a common problem with that set).

Also, at the second store I visited, I asked about the sale, and the clerk was sure I meant the Criterion sale. He was really contentious and argumentative until he scanned a few titles I handed him. I didn't feel too regretful about leaving that store empty-handed.

It is amazing how many of these sets seem to be floating around without a slipcover (especially since the slipcover is clearly part of the packaging). I found the Bunuel set today but passed since no slipcover (and the clerk also insisted it wasn't on sale). I'll probably order some of these online and hope for the best.

That's the truth. The box I had held for me proved to have a floater and was the only one in stock. So I opened it after paying for it and everything was perfect.

For the first time today, I was unable to use the 5 off 20 coupon a my B&N on the Jean Renoir set. They said that it had to be at least $20 dollars and it was down to $12 after the coupon. I quickly refuted by saying that the selling price was originally $25 and it should take it. They didn't buy that, so I asked for the coupon, but the wording on the coupon must have changed because it now says current price instead of selling price in the top paragraph.

Anyone else notice this word change?

(the explanation of the "selling price" is still located a few paragraphs down, but the term is nowhere to be found in the top paragraph like it used to be.

I looked over a copy of the July 2010 coupon I had saved over on my computer and the "current price" wording is still in the first paragraph too. So I don't think the wording has changed.

I don't get what those people were saying that the set was $12 after the coupon either.

It's probably useful in the future to request a pickup in store and print out the confirmation email. Usually the price shows as $20 and you can point that out to the cashier.

^^ "I don't get what those people were saying that the set was $12 after the coupon either."

I meant to say it was down to 12 after the 50% discount. I have never had any trouble during the criterion sale, and usually when they would say that the set wasn't $20 (because the discount dropped it below) I could point out the definition of "B&N selling price" in the third paragraph, but the term "selling price" was nowhere to be found in the top little "employee directions" paragraph and was instead the "current price".

I could always get them to take the coupon because of the selling price definition, but it seems to have been changed to current price. This made me look pretty silly when I was telling them to check out the definition of selling price, when that term was nowhere to be found in the paragraph they were reading.

Looks like current price was used on earlier coupons. Here is a copy of a $5 coupon from last year along with the current one to compare the wording.

^^^^So there's been no change in the terms of redemption. That's a personal relief because I'd like to continue having SOME confidence that the coupon will be accepted when I approach the cashier.
My purchase of the Renoir set did go through with the $5 coupon applied (final price something like $6.25 plus tax).

Picked up The Man Who Would Be King, Blow Up, and Delicatessen. I'd have gotten more but I'm trying to refrain from any more blind buys until I unload some of the DVDs I never watched more than once. All in good time, I guess...

Yes, those other two are, and I believe the Alain Delon set is also.

Edit: Alain Delon is not a padded slipcover.

I wasn't sure entirely and its probably a stupid question since I highly doubt they even use the format anymore, but I assume Mad Men Season 1 DVD ($19.99) is widescreen, not full frame like B&N is listing it correct? I think I'm going to pick up Season 1 and 2 for $40, seems like a good enough time to jump in with a blind buy. Didn't quite care for the two or three episodes I saw almost three years ago, but my tastes have changed since. Thanks.

Yes, that happens a lot on TV releases it seems, stores listing them as FF. But Mad Men was only produced in WS versions, and well worth the purchase imo. Although we have seen cheaper than $20 per season....
