Re: Paul Newman Collection $25 shipped

The collection is a mixed bag. Harper is a great hardboiled detective movie, and The Drowning Pool its disappointing sequel. The Young Philadelphians and Somebody Up There Likes Me are enjoyable late '50s melodramas. The Macintosh Man is one of those post-Bond spy films that tries to be realistic about the subject and comes off as just boring. The Left Handed Gun is a muddled retelling of the Billy the Kid legend from Arthur Penn, and is mainly interesting as a forerunner of the Hollywood New Wave. Pocket Money is another muddled Western, this time from the early '70s and is only of interest if you want to see Newman and Lee Marvin team up.

Re: Paul Newman Collection $25 shipped

Yes, the highlights probably would have to be the Harper films. Based on Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer private investigator circa '60s, they portray a P.I. who's a little down on his luck: pulls a day old used coffee filter out of the garbage to reuse, drives a beautiful sports car (Porsche, I believe) that we later discover has a door panel finished only with primer, etc. An influential series that captured an era and attitude with perfection.
These films still stick in my mind and I haven't seen them in almost 20 years...and then there's that cute, sexy 17 year old Melanie Griffith in Drowning Pool.

And if you're a Terrence Malick fan, he wrote the screenplay for Pocket Money (pre-Badlands).

Just as a heads-up, Harper -- which usually hovers around $20 if you want to buy it outside of the set -- is also on sale for $6. http://www.amazon.com/Harper-Paul-Newman/dp/B000HWZ4D4/
