Re: Criterion Sale? Ever Again? (NOW ACTIVE/ALIVE AT B&N)

So I was planning on hitting 1 B&N on the way home, but my experience necessitated a second stop. Thankfully they were on my way home or near my home. FYI, the store at The Grove in LA was a bit of a hassle. Pretty good selection, but problematic check out. I went to a young cashier who seemed totally willing to ring 2 orders, but when he had issues ringing it up he just passed me over to the manager. The manager ended up letting me buy 1 with the $5 coupon, but not 2 and like I said, it was a bit like pulling teeth. He wasn't jerky or anything, just another one of these, I have to read every iota of the coupon people. I won't fault him if that's what he feels he should do. Still, I took the rest of my business to another store in Glendale. That one was a dream. No explanations needed. Got the movie with 0 hassle.

Red Desert
Mystery Train

True, but my observation was based on what another member posted about canceling memberships bought in store. I do believe you have to go back to cancel it if bought in store.

2 or 3 Things I Know About Her - Double Suicide - Story of a Prostitute - Nights of Cabiria - Mamma Roma - Les Dames Du Bois De Boulogne - La Commare Secca - Gate of Flesh - Story of a Prostitute - When a Woman Ascends the Stairs - Vengence is Mine - Le Ronde - Pigs, Pimps, and Prostitutes... - Mona Lisa - Children of Paradise - Jeanne Dielman... - Naked Kiss - Revanche (Thanks Chad)
The Mizoguchi's Fallen Women Eclipse set has two movies about prostitutes (Women of the Night and Street of Shame), one about a secretary who becomes her boss' mistress to support her family (Osaka Elegy), and one about contemporary geishas who are only a small step above prostitutes (Sisters of the Gion). Best Eclipse set that I've completely watched so far, and Street of Shame is one of Mizoguchi's greatest movies.

There are probably a few more Criterion movies that involve prostitution.

A little more damage done to the wallet recently, using $5 coupons:
Le Plaisir
Solaris (saw recently at the Anthology Film Archives and found it mesmerizing).
Vengeance Is Mine
Last Year At Marienbad

Yeah, I've done that. You just go to the store where you bought it and they issue a full refund in the form of original purchase. The cashier was perfectly fine with it. No fuss, no muss.

Add Vivre Sa Vie to the prostitution list. Hmm, maybe Criterion should make an Explore page for this subject, they actually are taking suggestions for it at this time.

It's after all the world's oldest profession.

You can add:

Stagecoach
My Own Private Idaho
Pandora's Box

... and Short Cuts if phone sex counts.

Thanks obscurelabel, Chad, ororama, Mosskeeto, and bluetoast for the prostitution film suggestions, see post #807 for list to date. If anyone come up with more please let me know to satisfy my morbid curiousity. Guess even those art-houses have cliches.

Re: Criterion Sale? Ever Again? (NOW ACTIVE/ALIVE AT B&N)

Just received an email from Criterion. Sale is going on thru August 1st. I remember seeing someone say it would end on the 20th. Didn't see anything posted about the official date.

Nice! I'll probably have to place an online order sometime during then for stuff that I can't find in-store.

Re: Criterion Sale? Ever Again? (NOW ACTIVE/ALIVE AT B&N)

Was away for a few days for business, so today was my first day to buy something. Brought 14 coupons with me and went to the closeset B&N to me in Manhattan. Salesperson was very nice and allowed me to use all 14 coupons for individual transactions. All are titles that came out since the last sale.

Picked up the following Blu-rays for $13.00 + tax:

Close-up
M
Hunger
Revanche
Gomorrah
Stagecoach
Gimme Shelter
Ride With The Devil
Walkabout
Days of Heaven
Summer Hours

These 2 were $17.50 + tax:

Che
Leopard, The

And one for$8.50 + tax

Night Train to Munich

Still have a few more to get, but picked up the bulk of my wants.

Re: Criterion Sale? Ever Again? (NOW ACTIVE/ALIVE AT B&N)

Online using AAA discount:
Andrei Rublev
And the Ship Sails On
Thief of Bagdad
Walker
House of Games
Youth of the Beast
Vengeance is Mine

Got mostly old ones I have been wanting. Thanks for the heads up but I messed up BIG because I just bought about 8 new ones within the last month before this sale and I'm kicking myself. I could have saved about $5 to $6 if I waited for the sale. Night Train to Munich cost me $10 more then this sale. Oh well that is life.....

Also wondering if anyone is interested Small Back Room is available online but not at the discount. I tried emailing them to see what they would do, no response. Wondering if more people email maybe they respond or put it on sale.... worth a try right? Thanks

Snagged two more Blu-ray:

Bottle Rocket
Paris, Texas

Just handed the girl one each of the $5 coupons; scanned them without comment or question.

This store had been hit pretty hard in the Blu-ray section, and I just barely glanced at the DVDs. Glad I reserved Bottle Rocket on Wednesday. Still had a lot of the old digipacks....almost every original Blu-ray digipack title in stock. Still need Marienbad and 400 Blows in keep cases.

It's not among the list of fall Criterion releases, although another Kirk Douglas classic Paths of Glory is on that list, and I did a quick Google search before I bought it and couldn't find anything about an upcoming BD release of Ace in the Hole. However, CC did a new digital transfer of the film for the 2007 DVD release so I'd imagine there will be a BD release at some point. I just wasn't willing to wait for a few years if it takes that long. And if it's released within the next year I can probably sell the DVD for about what I paid for it.

Re: Criterion Sale? Ever Again? (NOW ACTIVE/ALIVE AT B&N)

For whatever reason, I am not as excited for this sale than I was the last time around. I really only have two titles that I am interested in getting at this time. I will get those two, but for the most part I am satisfied with my collection of Criterions as it stands.

The sale runs through Aug. 2nd. I don't know why people are still speculating about the end date as B&N has signage in the media section about the Criterion sale with the end date right there on it.

"M" on blu-ray was probably why I was most excited for this sale. That was the title I wanted the most. Finding "The Man Who Fell to Earth" on blu-ray was just icing.

It is pretty ridiculous when you consider that Target and Walmart are 90 days, Borders is 45 days for (free) Rewards members, and Best Buy is 30/45 days.
