Funny thing is, I just got my final dvd in today from the last 25% off sale. Yep, it took that long to complete my order.

I've literally purchased a few hundred titles during the many previous sales, and with perhaps two or three exceptions, my final cost was always between 45-50% off MSRP.

I may pick up a few items, but no big orders from me on this new "sale".

The only good thing about this is people internationally could maybe squeeze a few extra titles in to the $300 shipping bracket (so it's not $100) since all prices will be knocked down without a code. Before they never counted your sale price towards shipping, always the real price. Not a huge help, but it's something for large orders. Guess I'll have to see when it drops, but I don't think I'll be ordering this time if a lot of titles are going to be regular priced and higher. Like a couple Shaw Brothers sets I planned to get are going to skyrocket compared to the regular DD price.

Fuck this. Hopefully there will be another 25% off sale next summer, otherwise my days of non-import DVD buying will pretty much be over, excluding Amazon sales and the occasional B1G1 at DD. Guess this means I have twice as much to spend during the B & N Criterion sale!

If you are a fan of the classic 20% off sales of bygone years this is only a 4% loss. Admitedly, which could add up on orders of several hundred $$$. In the old days regular price was 30% off, plus 20% off that equals 44% total. That's 4.00 more than a $100 order would have been a few years ago.

Re: DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09

My guess is that for the last couple of 25% events DD has lost sales volume because they happened to coincide with the worst of the Great Recession. Even super deals for discretionary goods don't move as many buyers to buy as much in these conditions. (I know I didn't spend as much at DD late last year and this summer, with my own business way down.) So there they are giving this genuinely "deep" discount and they're not hitting their numbers. What's odd is that they didn't revert to 20% off or simply skip having a sale this season. What they're offering is pretty lame. I can't imagine DD's regular customers won't blow it a big raspberry. But c'est la vie, because I figure some good deals will pop up at Target and BB and Wallymart and even Amazon in about 2 1/2 weeks.

Good point! I bought stuff during the 20% off sales for years. And like you say it's not that much of a difference.

BTW, I am sure that a few sales ago when it changed to 25%, DD said it was to help out with the downturn. I took that as meaning only temporary. Don't know if that old thread is still around but I do seem to recall that.

Anyway, now I will have to do my lists over again. I made up a couple to get as close to $150.00 as I could so it would keep the postage down. Now with the switch I will have to re-calculate. I was all set and now I have more work to do. Dang it. LOL!

James :)

heart = broken

this was going to be my last hurrah before i finally pay off my visa before the interest rate hike next year. now it looks like Christmas isn't coming early (at least from DD).

for most of the items i wanted (anime) it will only be a savings of less than $1 off the regular prices, for others there's a few bucks increase. :(

I have about 20 titles in my DeepDiscount wish list in preparation for the sale. Now I'll wait and see what DVDPlanet does and compare prices later.

Their service must be going downhill: Stepfather is still on backorder from an order I placed three weeks ago and Tales from the Darkside S2 was shipped three weeks ago and I finally threw them an email. Being close to Chicago, I usually can get a DVD from them within a week. Something is going weird with them.

Take a look at their DVD home page ...... notice the current sales, with discounts touted at 47%, 55%, 45%, even one at 61%. So why should I get excited about paying only 40% off??????

But back in those days I don't remember Amazon and Walmart being as competitive. So even though it was less it still seemed like more due to the price differences. On several of the items on my wish list that I would normal have purchased at this sale, it is only a few dollars difference. With such a minimal difference I don't need to spend now I can wait and gradually gets things throughout the years.

So while yes, the difference may not be as much compared to what we use to see in sales of earlier years. Prices have gone down over the past few years and competition has increased leaving us to seek better deals then this.

Re: DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09

The thing that sucks the most for me is that I have a spreadsheet that automatically queries my wishlists and I can evaluate at any given time (for example) if Amazon has a better price than what would be 25% off at DDD or DVDPlanet. Now since the sale is 40% MSRP, I would have to input those manually. Not an easy task for >150 DVDs on my wishlist.

So much for Christmas shopping-- which I've done almost exclusively through DD for the past few years. Hello, Amazon.

I noticed back in September/October DD had their fall Warner box set sale but changed the terms from the B1G1 of the last couple of years to up to 50% off MSRP with many less than 50%. Didn't buy a single set this year.

not to jump on the bandwagon here, but I too will probably be drastically changing my dvd buying habits as a result of what appears to be replacing the bi-annual sale. The bi-annual sale basically meant that I could buy all my dvd's in one swoop and feel confident that I got the best deal possible without obsessing and spending way too much time tracking prices.
I sent deep discount an email not to complain (cause I'm sure they're doing this cause they have to) but to give them some feedback and let them know that basically as a result, I'll be spending a whole lot less money there. Can't hurt to try.

Ditto...I've been putting $3k or so a year into these sales over the past few years. Can't complain too much since it represents the bulk of a nice collection, but I'll certainly miss the ease of ordering from one source and having that big "event" a couple of times a year. It was nice while it lasted.

I was going to say the same thing. Maybe DVDPlanet will have a 25 percent off sale so all isn't lost. I was going to start buying blu-ray titles with the next sale but I guess it will be wait and see.

I'm especially ticked off since this likely means that DVDPlanet wont do the sale anymore either...and I have almost $450 in credit waiting to be spent. :mad2:

$300 in credit for me, so I hear you. DVDPlanet's blu-ray prices were even higher than Deep Discount's, so I'm not too excited.

Of the dozen or so items currently on my wishlist comprising what I'd have ordered this time, the prices will be ~$5-~$10 per item *higher* than if this were a traditional 20% off sale. Because of this I'll most likely sit this one out. It makes me sad as I've added significantly to my collection because of the really good DD sales in the past. This one doesn't qualify for that statement... of course, neither do *most* of the "sales" they've had since the July 25% off sale.

We can only hope that they'll see enough of a decline in sales that the good sales will return in December and/or later.

I miss the days of Deep Discount being true to its name. This is definitely a "sale" to avoid.
