He said it will mostly (as of now) be factory sealed titles along with a wall or two of used $9.99 DVDs set at buy one get one. These used titles will come from other regular Blockbuster rental stores. There was no mention of buying used DVD. Though if they did it would certainly make the store more interesting. Something like a Movie stop? Anywho... Sounds interesting... Perhaps a last ditch effort of Blockbuster to say in business?
This is true of the King of Prussia store, is a store closer to Royersford doing this too?

It's nothing to do with trying to stay in business, it's another way to BE in business.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Just ran to the BB going out of business by my house and they were down to $1.99. Bought a handful of movies and were surprised that most of them were only 49 cents - $1.30. Got both seasons of Jericho for $10, too.

Funny thing is, it's STILL cheaper to just use Redbox if you don't want to own the movies. :P

No, I was talking about the KOP store. Is it the only store doing this? I cant imagine it is.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

there are more, we just had our message of the week from the ceo and it included a video from another location, forget were, of another of these outlet stores.
More will be popping up across the country.

I'm not surprised they made this a retail store.
they were ok as a rental location but that store did very well on selling product.

I worked there last year to help out the manager at the time.
Some nutty people come in there.

About a half-dozen units will only sell DVDs and electronics, stop movie rentals
By Danny King -- Video Business, 1/5/2010

JAN. 5 | Blockbuster has started to convert some of its lesser-performing stores to outlet-type operations that offer only sell-through DVDs and consumer electronics for sale, but no movie rentals. The chain announced its intention to change these stores last fall.

The largest U.S. movie-rental chain has converted six stores to sell-through-only outlets, a Blockbuster spokeswoman confirmed today. The stores are in Texas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, California, Florida and Nebraska, she said.

The conversions, which were reported yesterday by CyberTheater.com, marks an early step in a cost-cutting process Blockbuster announced last September, when it said it would close as many as 960 stores by the end of 2010, while converting as many as another 300 stores to outlets with an emphasis on used DVDs. The retailer is trying to improve its financials while redeploying cash toward such initiatives as digital delivery and movie rental kiosks.

“All of these stores initially were part of the accelerated closure process of a handful of stores that began in October,” the spokeswoman said, adding that some of these stores’ leases were renegotiated to get better terms for Blockbuster. “Some of the stores performed strongly in the liquidation process and showed positive signs that they could be stand-alone retail businesses.”

The nearly 1,300 stores Blockbuster said might be either closed or converted to outlets accounted for as much as 18% of Blockbuster’s approximately 7,100 stores, or about the same percentage of stores that lose money, the company said in a September filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Blockbuster also has been broadening its digital-delivery service by reaching agreements with component makers including TiVo and Samsung. The chain also partnered with ATM-maker NCR to deploy as many as 10,000 Blockbuster Express movie rental kiosks by the end of this year.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

The Blockbuster at Route 73 in Berlin, NJ has four days left and still has some interesting stock, with used DVDs at $1.99 and new video games at 50% off. Picked up for $1.99 each:

The Wrestler (plenty in stock)
Frost/Nixon (ditto)
JCVD
5x2

Also had Resident Evil 5 CE brand new for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3, and Street Fighter IV CE for the Xbox 360.

Picked up Kung Fu Mahjong for $3.

R0 w/ half-Chinese text on rear of case...at a Blockbuster? Are these generally meant for stores in Chinese neighborhoods?

No. Just the way Tai Seng packages domestic releases of their Hong Kong/Chinese titles, using the original sleeve art elements and usually just adding their logo somewhere. They're available the same way to anyone who orders them. Now you just need the sequels . . .

$1 at my store today, too much to list but walked out with 35 titles. Between this, and the 35 blus I got at Hastings on Friday, my backlog is stupid now.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Film Movement Titles

Journey From the Fall

Robot Stories

2009 Titles.

All could be bought for 2 dollars with cases. Quality! Let's hear for good deals. Let's hear it for the end of the time of the Blockbuster a-rentin' so many movies out. I bought End of the Line and Vinyan for 4 dollars and sold them for 9 dollars credit at the other place I shop for used movies (I already own them). Ha ha. Good times. I knew they were undervalued.

Over the weekend, I picked up The Company and the first seasons of Dirty, Sexy Money and Dresden Files at a Blockbuster on the south side of Indy. They were $0.94 each and my total was like $3.01. Can't beat that.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Through about 10 visits (4 different stores) I managed to grab a good number of titles, but also noticed just how different some stores handled it. Some did a straight-up discount price (90% off) while others did a $ discount. The % discount almost always ended as the better deal - the $1.99/3.99 movies cost well below $1.00 (one of my last trips scored me 18 movies for $12 after taxes).

Probably the most disappointing thing were misleading signs - one read "90% no-cover-art DVDs" (the ones with "blockbuster" printer DVD inserts) - I spent about an hour digging through these and found a good amount of $1.99 / $3.99 movies (20-40 cents a piece!) only to find out the clerk would only ring them up as $1.00 ("All movies are $1.00") even after explaining the sign.

I ended up picking up:

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

I see that people bought more crap than they needed. I love these closings because it's a real test of our consuming disorder. There were some movies that I stopped myself from buying even for 2 bucks, because I knew that I wasn't going to watch them again (The Wrestler, Beowolf, Transporter 3, Tropic Thunder). Out of greed, I would be carrying eight dvds in my hand, and by the time I got to the cash register after an hour of sorting and pondering if I really needed that dvd, I would probably end up just buying two. The foreign Blockbuster Exclusive DVDs were the most tempting to buy - such as Gomorrah, A Christmas Tale, Roman de Gare, Chrysalis - but I controlled myself and just put them back knowing that I could just rent them for 2 bucks at my video store.

I spent about 3-4 dollars each and my most satisfying finds were:

ROGUE
BEFORE THE RAINS
DISTRICT B13
STAR TREK 4
STARCHASER
JOURNEY FROM THE FALL
UNDERWORLD RISE OF THE LYCONS

Picked up the following for $5.84 with tax at the Hyde Park (or is it Oakley?) location in Cincinnati yesterday:

- Bottle Shock
- JCVD
- Redbelt
- Rescue Dawn
- Roman de Gare
- Transsiberian

I believe today is their last day, but there was nothing that warranted a return visit.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

The store across the street from where I work put up a ton of store closing signs today. I might have to take a drive over there on my lunch hour tomorrow to see if I can find anything decent.
