Re: DVDPlanet 25% is live
Something weird happened. I logged on to DVDPlanet to see how my order is going and all I got is this: http://i579.photobucket.com/albums/s.../dvdplanet.jpg
I used up my credits yesterday and now, today, it's listed that I have $8.01 of store credit. Uh, I don't have a good feeling at what's happening. Can anybody help? I'll try to contact them tomorrow.

Thanks to the extra code, I was able to use up the rest of my credit for Predator 2 and Big Trouble in Little China blu-rays. Didn't get a discount on Big Trouble..., but I wanted it anyway and had no money.

Re: DVDPlanet 25% is live
I've placed two orders with Planet during this sale: the first generally to push me past the 200 FBP/$5 threshold, and the second to use that $5 credit. But I no longer know what I'm getting or how much I'll end up paying.
Order #1:
Judex (1917) $22.77 (before tax and Cashbaq)
Miller's Crossing $5.69
A Tale of Springtime $8.52
I only included the Coen film to push me past the free shipping threshold. I got my confirmation, then later that day I was informed that the Rohmer disk "is discontinued, and cannot be shipped." Okay, fine; I knew this was OOP, although why they even let me order it is a mystery. A few days later I receive the package with the other two discs, and the invoice says that the Rohmer is "on order expected to ship by 08/07/09." Confused, I logged into my account to find that Springtime is still "in process"...and also that Miller's Crossing (which I already received, and paid for) is "In Stock (Ships in 24-48 Hours)". Two weeks later and both still have the same status.
Worried that the Planet might not be around next year, and wanting to put them in my rearview mirror anyway, I placed another order late last night:
Order #2:
Shiri (1917) $14.22 (before tax, Cashbaq, and $5 credit)
The President's Last Bang $17.07
My Beautiful Days $14.22
This morning I awake to find that Shiri is "discontinued and cannot be shipped," although on the website it is still "In Process." My Beautiful Days was "temporarily out of stock" when I placed the order (as was Shiri), so I don't know if that's going to be canceled as well. And, thanks to the first invoice, I don't even know if "canceled" means "canceled."
Planet has always been kind of ramshackle, but it's getting ridiculous lately.

RIP DVDPlanet?
When I first started collecting DVDs about a year and half ago, Planet was the ultimate place to stock up on the basics. I began buying shortly before their biannual sale when they were still selling used movies online, and made several huge buys over a couple of weeks. Then they stopped selling used, and for over a year (and maybe still?) kept telling me they were only changing the website or whatever but they'd resume shortly ... almost two years since they're still unwilling to sell online what must be a huge stockpile available only in their physical stores. Now the website itself is routinely offline, as it is now, which I think confirms mounting fears that the site is closing down, maybe to be integrated into DD or whatever other tentacular appendages this monopolistic cabal has going.
It was good while it lasted and I'm glad I got in when I did, but I'm also glad I used up all my FB points and credit during this sale....

Okay - here's some weirdness for you.
4 days ago, I placed a 2nd DVDPlanet order using the coupon "SAVE". Order went through without a hitch, and I even received my disks today in spite of choosing the free Media Mail shipping option. No complaints there.
My order came to 56.88, less 25%, for a total of 37.42
The order confirmation screen said 37.42
The confirmation email from PayPal says 37.42
My order confirmation page on their website says 37.42
The invoice packed in the box says ORDER TOTAL 37.42
But the invoice also says AMOUNT PAID 56.88 (and AMOUNT DUE 0.00)
My order history on PayPal also says 56.88
And my CC shows that PayPal hit it for 56.88
So, it looks like DVDPlanet's system is a little screwed up.
I'll be calling them tomorrow to have them refund the 25% difference. I'm concerned about the PayPal part of this - I authorized the $37 amount and got a confirmation, but the charge was changed to the $56 amount. The other oddball thing is that the confirmation email reads:
Item: $11.23
Item: $11.23
Item: $7.48
Item: $7.48
Total: $56.88
Bottom line, if you used the LIVE coupon, be certain to doublecheck your payment info. The coupon is good, it's just that their system is screwed up and is apparently retroactively deleting the coupon from the total, even though it's applying it on each DVD.

Re: DVDPlanet 25% is live
Anyone know if Dvdplanet is working on coupon codes to be multiple use? Or maybe they are extending sale as I seem to remember sale was extended last time to compensate for wonky coupons after fixed..?

DVD Planet is going to credit back the different to me via PayPal. I'm guessing that their payment processing system sent the wrong info to PayPal - probably picked-off the value from a different field than they should have.
And to answer IamLegend - the coupons are supposed to be multiple use, but their website is rejecting them after their first use. They'll take the discount off your order if you call them: 888-993-6344

Re: DVDPlanet 25% is live
i'm curious if anyone thinks that dvdplanet will go under before the end of the year? i have about $125 in credit, but i'm having problem finding enough discs to order right now to use it all up. i'd much rather wait until the november sale (even though it's not definite) as there are many more things coming out this fall of blu ray that i would like to get instead. i'm just worried that if i wait, something might happen to my store credit. i know people have been reporting multiple problems with DVDP, but i was curious as to what everyone thought about their longevity?

Hard to find many prices where they are competitive, but I did manage to find they are close to the lowest on Eyes Wide Shut BLU-RAY, which is $9.66 after coupon.

Don't most businesses would pack it in during the first and second quarters, rather that close shop before black Friday?

Re: DVDPlanet 25% is live
Why all this negative talk about Dvdplanet going under...they are selling tons of dvds each month not just on their site and retail establishments but thousands each month on amazon also...it is nice that they have a trade in program and I am not mad at online stores if they can't give me atleast 50% off retail or below cost on dvds..
. I am happy that they exist and have been a customer all the way back to the "Original" 25% off sales at Ken Cranes Laser Discs which they bought out long ago. I can't say they are perfect...but show me one online store out there that is...

Re: DVDPlanet 25% is live
^I think it's because their prices are ridiculously high compared to the other online options right now. In the past, there was a big overlap between DD and DVDPlanet's prices, with DVDPlanet having lower prices in many cases. Do some searches on dvdpricesearch and you will find SO few titles where DVDPlanet has the lowest price. I have about $150 in store credit, but have been unable to spend it because I can't find anything worth it there. Everything I want is significantly cheaper elsewhere. What good is my credit if I'm spending 30% or 50% or even 100% more there than at DD or Walmart or Best Buy? They seem unwilling or unable to be competitive.

this dvdp summer/fall sale being the first sale to disappoint in my memory i concur. that said, yous guys should somewhat factor in that dvdp generally gives more credit than the usual suspects yesh? i know, i know... it doesnt really make me feel that much better either

Re: DVDPlanet 25% is live
Unlike previous years, you really have to search for the titles that are cheaper at DP this time around. I found several silent titles that were either not available at DD or listed there but several dollars higher. Usually, if DP was cheaper, it was almost always on individual titles whereas DD generally sold box sets cheaper.
As long as they don't go out of business before the Nikkatsu Neo-Noir set comes out - I'll be happy!

For me, their site simply isn't as professionally looking or working as it should. Granted I have only had one order where a mistake was made, and they promptly corrected it... other than that it's been fine. But again, the overall setup and vibes that the site gives me...has me crossing my fingers with every transaction. But yes, they've been great with trade-ins, I'll probably do a small trade-in for the fall ($50 worth) for the Nov sale, and that'll probably be it.

Anybody think that they will fix the site before the sale is over? I havent been able to checkout for several days. I should have ordered earlier.

Doubtful they'll bother. It seems like an omen that they don't care enough to maintain the website. You could go to a public library when you're ready to order or ask a neighbor to help you out and order from their PC.
