Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

Here are just a few I came across today during a browse - they have a LOT on sale at decent prices compared with the US releases:

(All prices in UK pounds)

Herzog/Kinski box set 11.98
Herzog vol 2 12.98
Hellraiser 1-3 (4 disc) DTS / Uncut 8.98
Almodovar Box Sets Vol 1-3 12.98 each
Star Trek Animated Series 14.95
Peckinpah Westerns Collection 11.98
Rocky Horror Show / Shock Treatment 'Lip Box' 12.98
Celebration of British Film (10 Movies) 12.98
Ghost In The Shell 1st Gig, 2nd Gig, Stand Alone Complex 15.98 each (compared to the $90 each on amazon.com)
Kubrick Directors Series 10 Disc Box 17.98
Black Books 1-3 10.12

And for the cinema purists, we have the Steven Seagal Legacy Box set at 15.58

Remember, with the VAT deduction, some of these titles will cost even less. (The Herzog sets came to 10.42 each, Ghost In The Shell 13.90 each, etc)

The Wizard of Oz (3 Disc Collector's Edition) - $9.50
28 Days Later (Limited Edition 2 Disc Edition) - 5
[Rec] (2 Disc Special Edition) - 7.50
Creepshow (2 Disc SE) - 5.75
Bridge on the River Kwai (2 Disc SE) - 2.85

also if you have a PS3 you can get Resident Evil 5 for $43 (save $20)

Several are tempting, but then I have to deal with PAL. I don't mind this for titles not available here, or if it is a UK show, but I don't like to do it otherwise...

Be aware! The WOZ set does have 3 discs but DOES NOT have any other extras that the US set has ie. photo cards and the booklet.

I use dvdcompare a lot to check out whether its worth getting the pal version. I do mostly just use amazon uk for the british imports, and in the case of movies like Dead End or Coffy, when a widescreen transfer isn't available in the states, etc

Yeah I knew that before buying. I'm not too bothered with missing out on postcards and a booklet...I don't think they are worth an extra $30 (the R1 version is going for $40 used)

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

The David Lean Centerary Collection is 14.98GBP - VAT
Powell and Pressburger set is 17.99
Ultimate Hammer 34.98
I have purchased more from the UK in the past 2 months that in the US. I've been loving the weak pound. I would take full advantage now. I anticipate a weak dollar coming.

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

I got the complete Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series for about $50 delivered a couple weeks ago (compare to $150 used at Amazon Marketplace).

Torchwood Season 1 was also pretty cheap (around X-mas I think I got it for about $25 delivered).

Might now be on sale now, but the Michael Palin travel series box set was down to 40 or 40 pounds...kind of wish I'd gotten it.

That David Lean set is terrific - a 10-disc set of BFI restorations.

My most recent order included that, and pro-rating shipping charges, my actual cost was $20.36 - about two dollars per disc!

Another great deal is the Hugh Laurie/Stephen Fry Jeeves and Wooster - all 23 episodes on 8 discs - final USD cost was $19.21.

I bought the Columbo Seasons 1-8 box set on Amazon UK a few weeks ago as its only 45.98 pounds, and just got around to opening it. Was missing the final disc of season 8 (instead I got a duplicate disc 1, and duplicate final disc from season 7). I wonder how they are about returns overseas.

I buy alot from Amazon UK; I prefer them to Amazon US. A few months back, that Wizard of Oz box was down to 4 pounds. I ALMOST grabbed it....

The UK Werner Herzog Boxsets have worse picture than the US versions. a warning.

Also, 8.98 for the Douglas Sirk Universal boxset with Has Anyone Seen My Gal?/All I Desire/Magnificent Obsession/All That Heaven Allows/Written On The Wind/The Tarnished Angels/Imitation Of Life
8 discs, no extras, but a very good bargain

They're pretty good. I got the LOTR boxset a little while back, and it had a duplicate disc for one of them. They resent the entire set, not just the one I was missing, and didn't get me to send the other one back to them.

Hey alfonso, you should try a hack on your existing player. I haven't had to worry about it since I bought mine region-free, but there are many people out there using these codes.

Start with this site: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks
...just put your model in the search bar and see if you can find one

If nothing there just do a google search.

If it doesn't work you can get a cheap one for around $50 on Amazon.com....I'll come back with a link
Here you go:
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVP514...4325527&sr=8-1 - $47
http://www.amazon.com/PHILIPS-DVP314...4325595&sr=8-3 - $50

both are Philips, same brand as I have. Mine has worked perfectly for about 5 years. I'm having problems with it now. For some reason it won't read new Region 1 dvds...no problems with any other regions or backup disc (burned). I may be picking up one of those soon.

good luck

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

I think I've looked up for hacks on mine. The one I used to use died on me and since then I've been using my sister's DVD player she doesn't use and it's pretty old. I'm a poor college student and don't own an HDTV or anything like that so I'm a little behind in everything. I've been meaning to get a new DVD player for sometime now. Thanks for the help though, I greatly appreciate it.

Also guys I was wondering what kind of shipping (or any other fees) are added to the orders when shipped from UK to US. Thanks! The UK has some damn good sets (like that one Godard set for example).

The Kubrick set would be £21 shipped to me. A currency converter tells me that's about $30 US. Pretty good no?

And what is the VAT thing you guys are talking about?

Shipping is around $5 for the first item and $1.50 for each additional item. Pretty good deal considering it only takes a week to get to the midwest. I've actually gotten amazon.uk orders before amazon.com orders that were shipped out the same day.

The VAT is the tax added to each item, but when you go through the checkout process it will be subtracted. We don't have to pay this tax us not being UK residents.

Ah gotcha. Thanks a lot!

What would be a good DVD player for region free usage to purchase if I was going to use it with an HDTV?

Sherlock Holmes - The Definitive Collection (Optimum using the UCLA restos) is 17 quid (was 14 a couple of weeks ago) - this looks fantastic and is a fraction of the price of the same R1 set.

Can't help ya there. I'm like you in that department. I've got the old-school tv. Don't mind it much, considering when I lived in Asia me and a couple friends (I think the most were 6ppl one time) would watch movies on my 8-inch portable dvd player. This tv is luxury compared to that.

I hear you on that one. Two of my friends have sick setups so I've basically touched gold but can't keep it!

Yes, I got plenty of BBC and other UK TV box set in the past few months. Really good deal.

Also, not exactly a hot deal, but some of you may be interested in

Ally McBeal - The Complete DVD Collection 49.98 lbs

since it is not available in US at all...

Apparently for the current costs, you could probably pick up a cheap region free player and still save money as opposed to buying the US releases.

Does anyone know if the VAT still around 17%?

BTW - thanks for the head's up OP. I need to pick up Chocolate (from another thread) and figured on throwing a few more into the pile while I'm at it.

Both the Herzog sets returned to their original $71.99 each at Amazon.com. I haven't seen any of the movies from either of the Herzog sets, so they are blind buys for me, and at 10.42 pounds each, hopefully a little less picture quality won't matter.

A few of the Young Indiana Jones volumes are around $25 US on Amazon UK

I see that there are two David Lean sets with some overlapping titles. Is there a quality difference in the sets? There is quite a price difference right now.

Thanks, I found a thread on the criterion forum. It looks like the Centennial Collection is definitely the way to go.

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

I just posted my most recent order on another thread, but thought I'd put it here as well if anyone is looking for more ideas.

Shameless (Series 1-5) - $26 (recommended in the other thread and the price was too good to pass up)

Badlands - $4.30 (only Malick film I haven't seen or own...and you can't beat that price)

The Crow (2 Disc SE) - $6.22 (cheaper than the region 1, plus it has Brandon Lee's last interview not on the region 1 edition)

Sleepaway Camp Trilogy (3 discs) - $6.22 (been on a horror kick lately and couldn't pass up the price)

Lars Von Trier's E-Trilogy - Element Of Crime / Epidemic / Europa (4 discs) - $24.34 (one of my favorite directors and I've only seen bootlegs of Europa and Element of Crime, haven't seen Epidemic yet)

...shipping was $10 for everything.

Wow, some great deals!

Ended up purchasing the following, prices are in US$.

The Wizard Of Oz (3 Disc Collector's Edition) [DVD] [1939] $8.50
The Powell And Pressburger Collection [DVD] [11 Disc] $22.50
Hitchcock 14 Disc Box Set [DVD] $21.25
Ben Hur (4 Disc Special Edition) [1959] [DVD] $9.60
Toy Story 2 (2 Disc Collector's Edition) [1999] [DVD] $6.25
Toy Story - 10th Anniversary Edition [DVD] [1995] $6.25
Peter Pan (2 Disc Special Edition) [1953] [DVD] $10.20
Shameless - Series 1-5 - Complete [DVD] [2003] [16 Disc] $19.50
Friends: Complete Season 1-10 (30 Disc Box Set) [DVD] [1994] $60
Gone With The Wind (4 Disc Collector's Edition Box Set) [1939] [DVD] $11.25
Film Noir Collection [DVD] [9 Disc] $18.75
Directed By Douglas Sirk Box Set [7 Disc] $11.25
*Superbad [Blu-ray] [2007] $7.50
*Closer [Blu-ray] [2004] $7.50
*Hostel [Blu-ray] [2005] $7.50

*Blu-ray was buy 2 get 1 free, so I pro-rated the price of those.

Shipping: $21.20

Total: about $250
Ended up with 107 total discs!

I was able to justify spending this much by selling my individual seasons of Friends (have 1-6), GWTW OOP 1-disc, and SD copies of Hostel and Closer, which will probably get me $80 or so total on Half.com/Amazon Marketplace.

Thanks for posting this sale, never would have known about it!
