Aside from the (admittedly valid) environmental concerns, why is this a bad idea vs. paying $5 to rent from a B&M chain and then having to drive back to the store?

Ok, you need another reason... Red Box is $0.99 rental. NetFlix-on-demand is cheaper than $5 and there is no return necessary.

Re: Netflix, actually it would be wiser to make an estimation of the carbon print for downloading and playing a Netflix movie (i.e. at the server's site) vs. preparation, printing etc. of such a disposable rental. It's kind of similar with the whole hydrogen car scam: it's clean indeed, but only at the car site. There must be somewhere a methane-burning facility, where the pollution is huge.

Environmentalist considerations aside, I don't like the idea of disposable rentals.

I've never used Netflix, and I don't even know what Red Box is, but I saw some of these tonight at Staples, and picked up Over Her Dead Body. For two bucks, I get to watch a movie I'm somewhat interested in seeing, that I probably won't like enough to want to own, without the bother of having to return it somewhere. Works for me.

I got "Beowulf" just for the hell of it- there's no extras but it's 16x9, 5.1 with Spanish and French dubs and subtitles and it's a dual-layer disc. And though the disc has now 'expired', I can still watch it, but I can't say how.

Sorry, when I said I don't know what Red Box is, I should have also mentioned that I don't care. But thanks! I won't be using them though; I've never rented a DVD, and I don't plan to start now.

It makes sense to release The Love Guru in this format as you would have an overwhelming urge to throw it away, anyway.

If they're able to sell disposible DVDs for $5 and make a profit, then they should sell all DVDs for that price.

I'm amazed at how popular the red boxes are. When i rent, I really enjoy browsing in the video store.

The disc doesn't delete itself. A coating on the disc surface becomes opaque after being exposed to air.

With Red Box, you can browse online just as easily, then rent the movie you want without having to drive all over the place trying to find it in stock.

Is it possible these are previously viewed discs with the "self-destruct" coating applied? Perhaps that would make them cheaper to sell?

Has anyone tested exactly how long it takes these discs to become unplayable? The nerd in me is curious

Because your question ignores the reality of Netflix for frequent film watchers where the user doesn't have to drive at all and the per film rate will work out to being much lower tha $5 per rental or for infrequent film watchers, the $0.99 option that is Red Box. Both of these options put the nail in the coffin of disposable rentals.

Sorry, but when you tried "disposable rentals" you rented a DVD. That you can decide when to start the rental doesn't stop it from being a rental.

If a DVD can be played on a computer that passes through to a video output, there is no way to stop someone from copying the output. If the DVD's protection scheme is compromised, even easier. So, he makes a copy of the DVD before it expires. The 'how' is not permitted to discuss on this forum.
