Is $16.xx a decent price for blu rays?
 

The current Amazon sale has me looking and wanting to buy blu ray movies but since I have just recently gotten a blu ray player I am not quite sure of the price. I just would like to know if $16 is a bargain or if I should just wait a bit and see how the price of these pan out. Or could someone let me know what a good price (besides free) would be. Thanks for your thoughts.

For a single disc $16 is a good deal, IMO.

I think it depends on the movie. I am still holding out and waiting for prices to drop.

I'm a cheap bastard. Unless it is a marquee title, I am reluctant to spend more than $10-12 on a title. It literally took me a month to buy the Dark Knight at $21.99, and I only got that because I got a $20 gift card.

I'm used to buying my DVDs for less than $5. I can get most HDDVDs for the same price. I think $10 for Blurays isn't that unreasonable.

It's a title by title issue just like SD DVDs. If you browse the forum thread covering Amazon's 3 for 2 sale, there are some bargains to be found if you buy the correct titles.

$16 is certainly not a bad price for Blu-Rays, but everything seems to have dipped below that if you're willing to be patient and vigilant hunting for that bargain.

I also have a new Blu-ray and have only 5 discs for it (2 I paid more than $16). Because I already have a large SD collection, I've decided to be very patient for what I pay for Blu-ray discs.

Over this past holiday, a lot of the main online retailers (amazon, deep discount, dvdempire, etc) have had really great deals - but again, it all depends on your idea of a bargain. These deals seem to repeat again and again. I've been burned a few times jumping on a sale, only for a 2nd sale to happen a few weeks later and the item being even cheaper.

With this economy, more and more deals are coming every week to try and boost sales. Buying used can be a good way to go too. Blu-ray is pretty durable, and i've yet to buy a single used blu-ray that was any less than perfect. I recently bought 'Before the devil knows you're dead" on blu-ray (used) for $8 incl shipping online so like anything, there are deals to be had if you search.

When looking at deals on amazon, I tend to use the following to keep track of the current prices:

Another good rule of thumb is not to buy 'older' films on blu-ray the first week of release, as they are bound to be included in a B1G1 free sale sooner than later. Death Proof, Planet Terror, Gauntlet, Under Siege 2, Southland Tales, etc all being good examples of that.

Not enough for me, I started really buying DVD's when they started hitting $10 consistently. $16 is still too much for me for a normal blu ray, and especially if I'm going to rebuy a movie I already have on dvd.

I would wait. You can check the forums often and find deals on Blurays below $16...look at the recent Sam's Club deal for Lionsgate BDs for $9.88. It's just how patient you want to be...everything will decrease eventually.

Movies like the Departed which came out in 2007 or Superman Returns still cost around $20 or more so I don't think the prices will go down with the big popular movies.

I wish blu ray players would not cost around $259.

Same here. From now on, I'm waiting for good deals. I'm aiming for approximately $10 per Blu-ray. I may not be purchasing many Blu-rays in 2009.

I trade in the majority of SD's if I buy them on blu-ray (unless the SD had a lot of extras which weren't included on the Blu-ray release)

Agreed, though I still have a hard time paying $10+ for a BD. Think I'll just wait for the $6 Bond type fiascoes at Amazon.

Too high for me for catalog titles I'm replacing. I'm averaging $8 - $12 per.

Now if it's a new Day & Date 3-discer like Wall-E for instance, that's a different story.

It depends on a title but I am averaging less than $10 per title. I really do not buy anything from the list price anymore. If you follow this forum you ll get really great deals.

I bought my first Blu-rays recently when Amazon had the $100 off when buying 10 titles. I averaged $7.14 each and got 6 QOS movie passes as well. The $7.14 is slightly higher than what I have averaged for my HD DVDs. I have so many movies to watch it will be several years before I get caught up. So I'll wait for BDs to be <$10 since I don't consider them to be worth more than that, unless it's a TV series that I wnat to own on BD. Meanwhile I just rent the newer titles that I want to see.

I've been averaging $10 to $14 for "library" titles and $22 for new releases. If it starts hitting under $15 and it's a title that I think can benefit from higher quality, I'm interested.

$9.99-13.99 -> True bargain, don't hesitate.
14.99-16.99 -> Cheap, likely will drop to lower tier at somepoint
17.99-19.99 -> Fair price for new release or hard to find discounted item
20.99+ is not a bargain.

Mad Men: Season 1
Rescue Me: Season 3
Blade Runner

I pretty much agree with beebs. However, there are always exceptions. And this is where I reference Alien189. It really does depend on the movie you want. For example, I forked out $25 for Sleeping Beauty on Blu. Probably shouldn't have, but I really wanted to see it NOW, versus waiting two months later when it dropped $5.

$16 isn't too bad, but it's at a price point where you should or will get some repeat viewing time out of it.

I just started getting my TRUE keepers since I have alot of dvds.

Most of my 23 titles were in the $15 dollars range with Blade Runner at $18 and Batman Begins Collector Ed. at $20 being at the top end of the range.

My average cost for 23 Blu's I have was $13.6

$16 a good price? No way. I've never paid that much, save for things like multi-disc TV sets. My limit is about $10 per BD and my average cost substantially less than that.

Patient shopping of sales here can help to find BDs at decent prices. I've never understood the "gotta have it NOW" mentality for new releases. I'll wait until I can find it cheap.

Where are people getting the less than $10 blu-rays? Aside from the recent James Bond amazon price snafu, most blu-rays seem to be averaging out at about $10-$13 in the B1G1 / B2G1 deals, etc.
