I finally decided to place an order, but for a few of them it now says ships in 1-3 weeks. :(

In for Elevator To The Gallows and Il Posto tonight, will probably pull the trigger on Salesman, Jules and Jim, Fists In the Pocket and maaaaaaaybe Night and the City tomorrow or Tuesday. Anybody have any thoughts about the last two? They would be blind buys...

lohengrin 09-15-08 06:48 AM

Fists in the Pocket was a blind buy for me a couple of years ago, and I can heartily recommend this amazing movie. If you like noir, you'll enjoy Night and the City. If you're planning to get Jules et Jim, you might want to also consider Shoot the Piano Player, also on sale. Sorry, can't vouch for Salesman.

Anyone that recommends Throne of Blood?

cgray 09-15-08 09:13 AM

Anyone? Sure... see if you can find a negative review! It's an awesome samurai translation of MacBeth. If you like other Kurosawa, you know what to expect. Mifune and co. are here as well. Some of the images in this film are among Kurosawa's best.

Devore 09-15-08 09:26 AM

I meant if it was as good as other Kurosawa films, and that was pretty clear in my head :)
Thanks.

I strongly recommend it.

Thirdededed. One of the best Shakespeare adaptations I've seen. My favorite Kurosawa as well, though I haven't seen a whole lot.

Devore 09-15-08 11:04 AM

Will be going for Throne of Blood then.
Thanks all.

cgray 09-15-08 02:08 PM

Good choice. You won't be sorry. :)

If you're a fan of documentaries, especially ones dealing with the human condition, than Salesman is a great pick. The gradual decline of the central Bible salesman, Paul, a tragic Willy Loman type, is truly moving to watch. That's not to say these salesmen have your complete sympathy - as you observe their repeated rituals, you discover how manipulative and almost bullying they can be.

lohengrin 09-15-08 10:28 PM

Much as I enjoy documentaries, for some reason Salesman has never been on my radar. Thanks, NoirFan, for making a case for the film.

If you're a documentary fan, definitely check out Frederick Wiseman's films. As I mention in that thread, the presentation is quite spartan considering the price, but the films are often stunning.

Cool, everything that was OOS for me shipped out either yesterday or today.

Is this new slang?

Don't know how to not sound like an ass, but no it's not. Unless you're being sarcastic.

Thanks. I've never heard that before.

Bicycle Thieves, The 400 Blows, and La Strada all arrived this week, safe and sound. I wish Do the Right Thing, Rashomon, and the Yojimbo / Sanjuro set were included in this sale. And man oh man have I had my eye on that Paul Robeson set for a long time but even a dramatic dip from $89 to $47 for his 5-disc set is awfully steep just to get a decent copy of The Emperor Jones.

Marwan 09-28-08 01:08 PM

how long do you guys think this sale will run for?

For me, the only film in that set I really want is Borderline. There is a BFI edition, but it never seems to be on sale.

'Till a few hours ago. It's over.

Sweet. I placed an order for The Virgin Spring and Elevator to the Gallows last night after putting it off for a while. Guess I got in under the wire.

Marwan 09-30-08 01:31 PM

I really wish amazon would have an expiry date on their sales, would make it a lot easier for their customers, here's hoping they have another sale on different titles in the future... on the bright side at least most of the eclipse series from criterion are reasonably priced.

Ghostface180 09-30-08 01:35 PM

Completely missed the sale. Would have put those Amazon GCs to good use

How does an expiration date help the customer?
