Title of my email says: What Will it Take to Shop With Us Again? How About 20% Off

Coupon expires Oct 20. FWIW, the account I recieved this in was not my main account (email account associated with BN membership).

1. BENEFITS.
The Barnes & Noble Member Program entitles Members to the following benefits:

1. The following everyday discount (the "Everyday Member Discount") on eligible purchases made at Barnes & Noble, B. Dalton, and Bookstar retail stores ("Barnes & Noble Stores").
* 40% off the list price of the current hardcover Barnes & Noble Store Bestsellers. Applies to the 10 fiction hardcover bestsellers and 10 non-fiction hardcover bestsellers based on sales at Barnes & Noble Stores and designated by Barnes & Noble from time to time.
* 20% off the list price of all Barnes & Noble designated adult hardcover books. Does not include gift products (such as hardcover journals), hardcover books in the Barnes & Noble "bargain," "juvenile" or "Barnes & Noble Jr." areas.
* 10% off the marked Barnes & Noble sale price of other eligible items. Does not apply to hardcover Barnes & Noble Store Bestsellers or adult hardcover books.

2. The following benefit on eligible purchases made at Barnes & Noble.com ("www.bn.com") and on ship-to-home orders placed at Barnes & Noble retail stores.

Free Express Shipping. Applies to orders made at www.BN.com and on Ship-to-Home orders placed at Barnes & Noble retail stores, shipped within the continental U.S. only. (a) For the Everyday Member Discount or other benefit to apply, the Membership account must be active and available at the time of purchase. Members will NOT be reimbursed retroactively for purchases made without an active and available Membership at the time of purchase.

(b) The Everyday Member Discount is only valid on eligible purchases at any Barnes & Noble Store. The Everyday Member Discount is not available on purchases of the following: products or services at www.bn.com, products or services at Barnes & Noble College Bookstores or websites, Gift Cards; eGift Cards; digital content (including but not limited to digital books, magazines, and periodicals); NOOK™ and related accessories; other hardware and electronics; software; downloadable audiobooks in MP3 or any other format; gift-wrapping fees; shipping and handling fees; or Membership fees (new or renewal).

(c) The Everyday Member Discount will be applied after all eligible discounts and deductions (e.g., non-Member discounts, seasonal sale discounts, etc.) are applied, except for coupons or where otherwise noted. Coupon discounts will be applied after the Member discount.

(d) The Everyday Member Discount cannot be used in conjunction with any coupons or with any corporate or prearranged group discounts, unless specifically stated. Such exclusion includes the following, without limitation: Educator discounts; employee discounts; corporate or institutional discounts.

(e) Memberships are for individual use only and are non-transferable. When used online at www.bn.com, a Member number may only be associated with one www.bn.com account.

(f) We expect Members to submit and maintain accurate and current user information in connection with their Memberships. Such information includes name, address, email address, and telephone number. Periodically we will utilize the National Change of Address (NCOA) system to update the mailing address of accounts in our database, through information provided by the United States Postal Service. Members can change their account information by (i) updating Member profile data through an authenticated www.bn.com account, (ii) requesting an update from a Bookseller at the customer service information desk of any Barnes & Noble Store, or (iii) calling Member Services at 866-238-READ (Members located outside of the U.S. should call 201-272-3715). We cannot assume any liability for correspondence, mail or e-mail that is lost, delayed, or misdirected.

3. MEMBERSHIP FEE.
The annual Membership fee for a one-year term of Membership is currently $25. Membership fees are subject to taxation in accordance with applicable federal or state law. The annual Membership fee of $25 does not include applicable taxes. We may change the Membership fee at any time, but changes will apply only to new and renewal Memberships. The fee is not refundable unless the Membership is canceled during the first thirty (30) days of the Membership term (including any renewal term).

4. FREE TWO-MONTH MEMBERSHIP; TERM AND RENEWAL.
The Free two-month Membership is for new Members only who have not previously enrolled in Membership. The Free two-month term of Membership is two months from the date of enrollment. Upon expiration of the Free two-month Membership, your credit card will be automatically charged $25 for a full term of Membership. The resulting one-year term of Membership (referred to as "Automatic Renewal Membership") will automatically renew each year, for additional one-year periods.

The Free two-month Membership may be cancelled at any time prior to the expiration date of the Free two-month Membership and your credit card will not be charged. In such case, the Free two-month Membership will expire as of the date of cancellation. You can cancel the Free two-month Membership (i) by notifying Member Services by telephone, at 866-238-READ, or (ii) by electing to cancel your Membership through an authenticated www.bn.com account.

The Membership fees for the Automatic Renewal Membership will be billed automatically to the credit card we currently have on file, in the amount of $25 (plus applicable taxes in accordance with state laws), upon expiration of your Free Membership. Thereafter, Automatic Renewal fees for standard one-year Memberships will be billed annually and automatically to the credit card we currently have on file, in the amount of the then current Membership fee (plus applicable taxes in accordance with state laws), approximately one month prior to your Membership expiration date.

When you enroll in the Free two-month Membership in a Barnes & Noble store, or if you renew your Membership for a full term in a Barnes & Noble Store and your account shows that you have agreed to Automatic Renewal, the Membership fee will be billed to: (i) the credit card used to enroll in the Membership, (ii) the credit card we currently have on file which you provided to us at the time of renewal, or when making a purchase with your Member card at www.bn.com, or (iii) the credit card which you updated through an authenticated www.bn.com account, or by calling Member Services at 866-238-READ.

When you enroll in the Free two-month Membership online at www.bn.com, or if you renew your Membership for a full term online at www.bn.com and you select Automatic Renewal, the Membership fee will be billed to: (i) the credit card that was active in your www.bn.com account at the time of the enrollment or the renewal, (ii) the credit card we currently have on file which you provided to us when making a purchase with your Member card at www.bn.com, or (iii) the credit card which you updated through an authenticated www.bn.com account or by calling Member Services at 866-238-READ.

5. CANCELLATION; TERMINATION.
(a) You have the right to cancel your Membership at any time. For information on cancelling the Free two-month Membership, see Section 4: FREE TWO-MONTH MEMBERSHIP; TERM AND RENEWAL. If you cancel your paid one-year term of Membership, you will only be entitled to a full refund of your Membership fee if you cancel during the first thirty (30) days of your initial or renewal Membership term. No refunds will be available after such thirty (30) day period (unless we terminate the Barnes & Noble Member Program in its entirety; see subsection below regarding program termination).

Within thirty (30) days of purchasing or renewing your paid one-year term of Membership, you have a right to cancel by:

i. Calling Member Services at 866-238-READ (Members located outside of the U.S. should call 201-559-3886)
ii. Contacting us via email at [email protected].
iii. For Memberships (new or renewed) purchased at Barnes & Noble Stores, presenting your Member card at the Customer Service desk.

(b) We may terminate your Membership, including any associated accounts, without notice, for any reason in our sole discretion, including without limitation our belief that continued use of such Membership would violate any provisions of this Agreement, applicable law, or otherwise be harmful to our interests. In the event of any such termination, you will be entitled to a pro rata refund of your Membership fee.

(c) We may terminate any or all of the benefits available under the Barnes & Noble Member Program at any time with or without notice. In the event of our termination of the Barnes & Noble Member Program, at our election we will either maintain your Membership benefits until expiration of the Membership current term or refund each Member a pro rata portion of the Membership fee for the remaining portion of the current Membership term.

6. MEMBER PRIVACY POLICY.
As a Member, the information we capture will be subject to the Barnes & Noble Privacy Policy as amended from time to time in accordance with its terms. You may view the current version of the Barnes & Noble Privacy Policy at any time online at www.bn.com or you may obtain a copy by calling Member Services at 866-238-READ (Members located outside of the U.S. should call 201-559-3886).

7. DISCLAIMERS; LIMITATION OF LIABILITY.
USE OF THE BARNES & NOBLE MEMBER PROGRAM AND ANY OF ITS ASSOCIATED BENEFITS IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK. THE MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS ARE PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" BASIS.

BARNES & NOBLE, INC., BARNESANDNOBLE.COM LLC, AND ALL OF THEIR RESPECTIVE AFFILIATES, DIRECTORS, OFFICERS AND AGENTS (COLLECTIVELY "MEMBERSHIP PROVIDERS") EXPRESSLY DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

MEMBERSHIP PROVIDERS MAKE NO WARRANTY THAT (i) THE BARNES & NOBLE MEMBER PROGRAM WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, (ii) THE BARNES & NOBLE MEMBER PROGRAM WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, TIMELY, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE, OR (iii) THE QUALITY OF ANY PRODUCTS, SERVICES, INFORMATION, OR OTHER MATERIAL PURCHASED OR OBTAINED BY YOU FROM YOUR USE OF THE BARNES & NOBLE MEMBER PROGRAM WILL MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS.

MEMBERSHIP PROVIDERS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF PROFITS, GOODWILL, USE, DATA OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES (EVEN IF MEMBERSHIP PROVIDER HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES), RESULTING FROM: (i) THE USE OR THE INABILITY TO USE THE BARNES & NOBLE MEMBER PROGRAM OR ANY BENEFITS THEREOF; (ii) THE COST OF PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS AND SERVICES RESULTING FROM ANY GOODS, DATA, INFORMATION OR SERVICES PURCHASED OR OBTAINED OR MESSAGES RECEIVED OR TRANSACTIONS ENTERED VIA THE USE THE BARNES & NOBLE MEMBER PROGRAM; (iii) UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO OR ALTERATION OF YOUR THE BARNES & NOBLE MEMBER PROGRAM DATA; OR (iv) ANY OTHER MATTER RELATING TO THE BARNES & NOBLE MEMBER PROGRAM.

SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF CERTAIN WARRANTIES OR THE LIMITATION OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY FOR INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR OTHER DAMAGES. ACCORDINGLY, SOME OF THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

8. GOVERNING LAW.
This Agreement, and the respective rights and obligations of the parties hereunder, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the State of New York, without regard to conflict of law principles.

9. BINDING ARBITRATION.
Any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to this Agreement (including any breach thereof) or the Barnes & Noble Member Program shall be settled by arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Commercial Arbitration Rules (including without limitation the Supplementary Procedures for Consumer-Related Disputes), and judgment on the award rendered by the arbitrator(s) may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. Any such controversy or claim shall be arbitrated on an individual basis and shall not be consolidated with any claim or controversy of any other party. The foregoing shall not preclude Barnes & Noble, Inc. or Barnesandnoble.com llc from seeking any injunctive relief in State or Federal courts for protection of their respective intellectual property rights (including such rights of their respective licensors).

10. ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
This Agreement, including all documents referenced herein, represents the entire understanding between us and any user of the Barnes & Noble Member Program with respect to the Barnes & Noble Member Program and supersedes any other agreements, statements or representations. Headings used in this Agreement are for reference only and shall not affect the meaning of any terms. Any user of any portion of the Barnes & Noble Member Program is deemed to have accepted the terms and conditions of this Agreement.

11. CHANGES TO THIS AGREEMENT.
We may change the terms of this Agreement at any time without notice or liability by posting a revised Agreement on the Member Program website located at www.bn.com/membership. Any change shall take effect immediately, unless otherwise provided. You may view the current version of this Agreement at any time online at www.bn.com/membership. You may also obtain a copy at any Barnes & Noble store or by calling Member Services at 866-238-READ (Members located outside of the U.S. should call 201-559-3886).

This Agreement was last modified on October 11, 2010.

Thanks, LASER. That'd be real handy. Interestingly, I went to sign up for the membership and it seems that I am still a member even though I had cancelled my B&N membership within a month and gotten a full refund.

The offer says it is for new members and not renewals. If you already have an account that had a membership you might want to use it on a different account that never had a membership associated with it. I actually got a email with this offer on a non-membership account this morning.

Well, in my case I still have a membership on that account despite the fact that I asked them to cancel it and they gave me a full refund. I really should not have the membership on that account. But I think I'm just going to use that ;)

You don't need a card. They should be able to pull your membership account up at a store with your name a phone number. However usually I print a copy of my membership information from the web site to bring with me to be safe.

Was just perusing bn's free trial membership promotion, now touted on their home page. Basically, you sign up for a free 2 month trial with a credit card...if you don't cancel, you're charged the $25 fee for another year of membership. You also get $50 in unspecified coupons in the bargain.

Sadly, this promotion succeeds in further alienating bn.com's current members. Renewing existing memberships gets you squat--no coupons, no free two months.

Would someone who does take advantage of this offer please post what coupons you receive? TIA.

I don't see how it alienates current members. It appears you get the coupon offer if you bypass the free 2 month trial. It says at the bottom of the 2 month offer "join now and get $50 in bonus coupons." The $50 in coupons they are offering are the same ones I already have posted on the first page, and can be found here on the web site. Anyways the coupons seem to work with all memberships online, and most stores accept them as well with a existing membership.

Laser, thanks for confirming that the coupons offered for trial membership are not exclusive.

That discounts the first of the two reasons why I think this latest promotion alienates current members. The second reason is that new members get 14 months for $25, whereas renewals get 12 months for their $25.

It's not a huge deal. But coming on the heels of devaluing existing, paid memberships by removing the extra 10% discount, I would counsel bn.com to think carefully about any promotions that discourage loyalty and encourage gaming (e.g. letting current memberships expire and starting new ones just for the 2 months). Just MHO.

I hear you and understand what you're saying on some of the other moves by B&N this year that seemed like a slap in the face to members. I agree they are making it tempting for existing or former members to game the system with this latest offer to get a few extra months. However don't forget B&N has regularly offered 20% renewal coupons for members when they renew their memberships, so it's not like they are completely ignoring current members. If you're lucky maybe they will send you one of the new 30% renewal coupons (see below). Looks like a new offer to encourage renewals, but personally I'm not expecting to ever see one of those in my email.

It's not that I disagree with with "lasermovies", but it is difficult to justify B & N's contempt of it's existing members. What do I mean? None of the regular customers are getting the e-mail coupons let alone any other mail. I, along with a lot of others, have complained, get a reply, promises made that everything is alright and then no mail again. Have I suffered? No; "lasermovies" gets the coupons for us. But it's B & N that got the $25 membership fee, not "laserman". When B & N does something wrong, and they clearly have, then criticism is in order.

I'm not sure what happened but yesterday I started getting B&N emails again with my member account. I got one yesterday for a book coupon and another today with the current 15% coupon for members. It's the first time I received any email offers from B&N with the account since early May. I complained to customer service a few times but that didn't seem to change anything. I'm not sure why all of a sudden they are showing up now. The last time I called customer service they didn't give me any answers to why the emails stopped, but did seem to have the information when they sent the last email in May. I got the impression they were intentionally stopped by them even though I was still signed up to receive emails on the B&N web site. I thought maybe someone looked at my purchase history and decided I was using too many coupons, and cut off the emails in an effort to stop me from using them on every purchase.

I can't speak for anyone else, but even with access to two seperate accounts and e-mail addresses, as I write this, I haven't received any e-mails from B & N for either account/address. I doubt excess coupon use will cause e-mail be blocked; they could simply decline taking the order(s).

I'm in the same boat. I've been a member for 3 years now, had all my online account preferences checked accordingly, and never yet received one email coupon from B&N. Not one that I can remember.

Before my B&N emails stopped in May I had three different accounts that received all kinds of coupons and information to different sales. Sometimes I even got a few coupons sent to my mail box at my house. Strange you never got any in 3 years. Seems B&N would want to make sure customers would at least occasionally get coupons to keep them coming back to buy stuff, especially if you purchased a membership. I really don't understand why they are not sending emails since it is not really costing them anything to send them. Well at least I'll try to keep posting coupons here as long as I can still find them.

Thanks, Laser. Especially for that last sentence. It's been your great work in this thread that got me started on using B&N more and has kept me going with them. But for all those coupons, they basically would have lost me as a customer many years ago.

I have no explanation as to why I've never received emails from them. I've reset my preferences several times over the years just to see if something would "kick in" with the system and I'd start getting them, but all to no avail. It is strange, but I'm not going to worry about it. They have me for about 7 more months and that's it. Hopefully you can keep posting coupon codes (assuming they keep giving them out that long) for a while longer. :D
