In any case, I've been prepared to see this come to an end for some time, so it wouldn't be unexpected at all. I'll start mopping up the last few titles I had any interest in, with the current B2G1 sale later today.
Fortunately, there's just not on the horizon with Criterion that I can't live without. Be kind of happy to see it come to an end (for a while) to be honest as it will force me to finally get around to watching everything from all the past sales.- Sort of like whats happened with the DD sale being a non event now.
My wallet will thank me if this doesn't happen. But there are other sources for Criterions (Amazon and DD). Amazon seems to have most of the newer Criterions at the $20 price point whenever they do sales so it's pretty much a wash when you factor in time and taxes.

Yeah I was going to mention Amazon has been a fairly consistent B&N alternative the last couple years- but I wonder if that has been in part a response to B&Ns regular sales? If the B&N sales stop, Amazons occasional 50% off sales might too.

Most companies want to spam you to death like DD. I don't understand BN's strategy on depriving us of emails.
I think B&N is trying to avoid falling into the Borders trap, where no one would step foot in their store for less than a 40% off coupon.

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2

So they did away with the automatic 10% off on $40 titles, huh? Good grief. It's getting harder and harder to muster any enthusiasm to get anything there. Good thing I had both 20% off mail coupons. With those, the promotion, and the 10% member discount, I still paid $1 more for each title than I would have with the Criterion sale and just my member discount.

Think I will definitely be letting my membership lapse come November.

No Criterion sale in July now?

UGH, if this is true I might end up having to get my 6 Criterions during their Buy 2, Get 1 free deal.

Really? Do I jump on them now while the 15% off and 20% off coupons are still valid or wait until we get closer to the second week in July and hope for confirmation on the Criterion sale, hmm...

I have $50 in gift cards waiting to be used.

They did? Who said that? I went back and looked, and didn't see anything, but perhaps my eyes missed it... My store still had the 10% off stickers when I was there last Wednesday...

Being a little unsure about if the sale will happen in July I went ahead and picked up 3 Criterions today. First, I made sure that they were not already on sale at Amazon. I also used two different 20% off codes and my 10% membership discount and was able to get 3 Blu Criterions for right around 62 bucks.

I noticed the three Criterions I had in my hand didn't have the 10%off sticker. So I asked the cashier and she looked surprised and said that for as long as she's worked she hasn't heard of that discount at all. I don't remember seeing her last November so I assume she started working sometime this year.
Whatever. Apart from 39 Steps, I've now got all the Criterions I have any real interest in (along with too many I have barely any interest in). I know I'll get by just fine without a July sale.

My plan today is to pick up three of the six Criterions I want. I received two 20% off coupons in the mail (#102601 and #102611). I want to use those plus the $5 off $50 coupon (#121961), and if they won't take both 20% off coupons, I printed a 15% non-member coupon (#503461) as a back up. Hopefully I can at least use the 15%, 20%, and $5 off $50. I am a member so I will get an additional 10% off. Not sure if Criterions are marked down an additional 10% in store as well.

$39.99 * 0.90 (Member Discount) = $35.99 * 0.80 (#102601) = $28.79.
$39.99 * 0.90 (Member Discount) = $35.99 * 0.80 (#102611) = $28.79.
$39.99 * 0.90 (Member Discount) = $35.99 * 0.00 (Free) = $00.00.

$57.59 before taxes.

Take off $5 ($5 off $50, #503461) since total is greater than $50 after discounts but before taxes.

$52.59.

Take $25 off (one of my gift certificates).

$27.59, add 6.25% sales tax, $29.31.

If they're marked down an additional 10% in store total would be $23.19 after sales tax.

And my luck they probably won't take any coupons, :/

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2

Haha, nope. I went there on my lunch break. The place was dead and the dude would only take 1 coupon.

I didn't have much time so I quickly asked about the Criterion sale next month and he said he didn't know, but right now it's looking like they probably won't have the sale.

I left....lovely...

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2

So I ended up ordering some titles online. I was able to get the $5 off $50 coupon to work (W8X8Y4N), and used one of my $25 gift certificates.

$42.02 for three Criterions. Either way, not bad. As far as the other three titles I want I'll take my chances and wait until July. Hopefully they'll have the Criterion sale. They should know a week before and the "Buy 2, Get 1" free deal ends mid July so worst case I'll buy the other three during that sale if I get confirmation of no 50% Criterion sale.

Any reason why La Haine is stubbornly stuck at $40?

The guy at my local store (who's been there forever) says the Criterion sale starts second week of July.

I hope so but I am going to try and show restraint this time. I'll try to limit my pickups to a few titles.

How exactly do the $5 and $8 coupons work? Can you use them together? If you have a DVD that costs more than $40, but you have discounts and coupons that reduce the price below $40, can you still use the $8 coupon? Do they track the coupon use by your member number so that you can only use one of the coupons each year, or can you use it multiple times like with other multi-use coupons? Thanks

Most of the time, yes, but it has been a YMMV at times.

No one here has ever reported tracking, and most have been successful with multiple uses. If you are looking to make a lot of purchases during the Criterion sale, it's best to spread out your visits over the three weeks, hitting multiple stores if you are able.

The $8 off $40 coupon is used on a movie that sells for $40 or more. I believe $40 is Barnes & Noble's selling price before discounts and taxes so if it rings up as $39.99, no dice. Although some people have used $8 off $40 coupons on $39.99 Criterions during 40% off and 50% off sales. Your mileage may vary though.

$5 off $50 is based on your order total after discounts but before taxes. If you order totals $50 or more before taxes but after discounts $5 would be subtracted.

As far as tracking coupon use . . . I am sure it's done, but Barnes & Noble would probably never admit it. In 2011 my membership card saved me $109, $273 saved from using member coupons, $95 from non-member coupons, heh.

2012 has been very weak. I probably won't renew my membership. Barnes and Noble is becoming more strict with coupon use and they rarely have good sales anymore. Add to the fact most of their media departments are disappearing and you have a recipe for no media departments in the future.

These are also explicitly stackable with each other and other New Member Welcome coupons.

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2

Hmm, I dropped by my local B&N today and asked if the 20% coupons worked with the B2G1 deal - the salesperson said yes, but the one that gets the 20% off would also be the free one because they'd both apply to the lowest cost item. That didn't seem right to me, but has anyone had it work differently?

She also said she had no idea whether the 50% off sale would happen or not.

It 'doesn't seem right' to you because it's incorrect.

AFAIK, any active, in-store coupon punched or scanned in will apply the discount on the most expensive item in transaction. This applies on B2G1 promos. So, the lowest price item in the promo will be free and the most expensive item remaining will have the 20% coupon applied to it.

Most of the time they will just take it off the highest non-free item. I have had a cashier give me this same argument one time and refuse to take a coupon on that basis. It is mostly just a bad luck kinda thing in getting the wrong person.

Thanks, I'll probably go back and give it a shot - I can always see how it rings up and then decide. And yeah, I've had not the best luck with that particular person when it comes to coupons and such.

And it says so on the coupon. If you check the fine print on the store coupons it will say something about the discount applying to the most expensive item. Here's an example:

just spoke to the clerk in a B&N here in New Jersey and he confirmed the 10% off all $40 and up titles is gone- though there are scattered 10% off deals here and there. Also he confirmed no Criterion sale for July
