Yes, online is a little cheaper, but not by much. In store is almost always MSRP on movies. Also, coupons don't work on pre-orders which are nicely priced.

During the last sales, the best approach was to pre-order in store using a 50% coupon. There were some sick deals on LOTR (extended) and the SW boxes.

There are plenty of deals online. There's a current sale of Blu-rays at 50% off or more.

Yea, there are some good deals there, especially if you are new to Blu-ray. Most of what I want is in the pre-order category, and coupons do not work on pre-orders.

They also have a pretty good sale on Disney DVD. I picked up some titles on my wish list like Hercules and Rescuers.

Not true. In-store DOES have sales. Both DVD's and BD's have a large section called "special values" which rotates, containing many titles up to 60% off.

During some sales, online can be a LOT cheaper. It all depends on what you're looking for.

As for pre-orders, I have always been able to use a coupon in-store when pre-ordering a title (and using Ship-to-Home so as to get a better price), much like your LOTR example.

I'm not sure if it's a new addition to the fine print or not, but the coupon states that it is not good on pre-orders or ship-to-home orders. Has anyone tried this yet with this new batch of coupons? They may have fixed that too.

It's not new. It has said that in the fine print for a long time but generally stores will still do ship to home orders and pre-orders with the coupons. However it has always been a ymmv situation since it's possible a store could say no.

You are missing my point. Using coupons in-store on pre-orders is the way to achieve great savings. The problem is, the coupons suck this time around on account of the controls they put in place. Trust me, I have a long list of items I would be working hard this weekend if I could run the printing press on a 50% off coupon.

As for the sale items on your list, or the "special value" section in-store, I give 'em a big meh. The only items I'm interested in there are the Coen Brothers films coming out next week, but I can't use a coupon online, and I'm not hauling my carcass to the store for a 20% discount.

It's always been there, it's just been YMMV.

Just checked my three accounts and got a 30, 20 & 15 percent off after
entering the codes at B&N dot com.

Will each coupons online discount be the same discount in store?

That's the way it worked last time they did this mystery coupon offer.

Those who are unhappy about the way this program is playing out and saying bring back the old system: This is (unfortunately, for even myself) the way they had meant the original offer to work but it was quickly foiled by the fact that the codes weren't single use or email specific. They corrected their mistakes and we were lucky to have had the opportunity that we once had. I thought the 50% offer would return and now regret not buying more items when I could.
They did send me a 20% off coupon to the one email address that they appear to like.

I'm not happy about it, but BN can do what they want. I don't fault them for putting the controls in place, but it is disappointing. I too wish I had ordered a couple of other things last coupon but c'est la vie -- there's always something to spend your money on -- if not at BN, then someplace else.

It is however one reason I never purchased a card. You never know what they will do and with tighter controls means less savings and less reason than ever to shell out $25 for the privilege of getting a decent deal.

I agree. While I don't want to come across as having a sense of entitlement to my previous abuse of their coupons, I do feel their current coupon distribution scheme will amount to a pimple on the ass of an elephant in terms of driving increased sales. When they can't even get the coupons (e-mails) in the hands of some of their loyal customers, you know they need to re-examine their strategy if they're going to survive.

I think they probably know exactly what they are doing. The only email offers I get From B&N are to addresses I've registered at BN.com but never actually used to place orders. The 2 accounts I have used receive no coupons. My guess is they try to send coupons in the hope of attracting new customers as opposed to rewarding loyal customers.

Absolutely correct. None of the addresses I've used to order as a member or to take advantage of a new account discount is the one that gets the special BN coupions/codes. They address the offers to someone who had that email before I took it over about 18 months ago.

I have 7 accounts and I only use one of them. I don't get any email from them on any of them and I've had these accounts for several years.

I checked online, and actually scored a 30% coupon. So considering I only got one email, I'm happy with 30%. I'm hoping the store coupon will also be 30% off, since I wouldn't want to make a trip there otherwise. Not a clue what I want to get. I have to put some thought into this...

I didn't get any e mail coupons, so will have to try signing up from an account which is not registered with B&N and see if that works and a big thanks to JWSTL for figuring that out.

In the meantime, if anyone has a 30% or more code they are not planning on using, please PM me. I don't buy a lot from B&N and will gladly reciprocate down the line. Thanks!

If possible you may want to try signing up using a different IP address. I was trying to get a extra email subscription for B&N and couldn't get anything to work until I signed up using a proxy server to change my IP. You also don't even need a B&N account to get the emails.

I think its just a defect in their email system. All companies want to spam customers about sales all the time. BN doesn't even send non coupon promotional emails to my emails.

Sure hope we see another 20% coupon to replace the one that expires. I have been wearing that out.
