Yea, considering the dearth of coupons we've seen lately, and the apparent end of the formerly dependable $5 off one DVD coupon, the value of a membership has been severely marginalized.

It's surprising to me that they would try and squeeze every penny out of their best customers (members) during a time when they are having such financial difficulties. You'd think they'd do everything they could to shore up a reliable base, while trying to reel in all the alienated Borders customers.

It might be because their deals amount to a loss. Amazon didn't make a profit for 5 years on its low price and free shipping business plan. Even now I think they rely on quantity sales to make their profit. However, the B&N deals we get tend to be far cheaper than Amazon would dare sell their items for. It isn't smart to screw loyal customers, so perhaps it's a matter of necessity. Of course I realize this is all speculation, but I know for a fact I only jump on B&N when they make Amazon's deal look like a boutique price.

Oh, I don't know about that. I think a great deal from B&N just about equals an average, everyday price from Amazon. Most of the time, you need to perform financial gymnastics to beat Amazon, relying on deal stacking, like the recent B2G1 + member discount + 50% off coupon.

Amazon can be a PITA with their yo-yo pricing, but I just let stuff sit on my wish list until it reaches a point where it makes sense to pull the trigger. For me, this is usually when I can get two Blu-rays for $25 in order to trigger free shipping. Otherwise, I look elsewhere, or just wait it out.

For DVDs and Blu Rays that's generally true. For books and CDs, good deals from B&N crush Amazon.

Think about Criterions alone. $13 to $15 each. That's not the end of it. I was getting nice blus for under $10 that were $15 to $20 on Amazon.

I will probaly not cancel my membership. I think I'm going to really go all out on the next Criterion sale(s) they have during this year (two different B&N's in my area have DVD departments which helps). Then unless they give me some sort of glimmer of hope or if they swerve us with no more Criterion sales I will probaly be done with them both online and their stores, let alone renewing the membership!

No doubt, those were some sweet deals. It was always YMMV, but I always got my fair share in the end. The $5 off one DVD coupon, which had been as reliable as a clock, seems to have been discontinued. Who knows if it will reappear in time for the July sale? I have my fingers crossed.

Again, this usually required a coupon in addition to a sale price, and the member discount. Otherwise, their everyday price on movies is MSRP.

I guess I stand corrected. Surprise B&N is going to do this again. I assume they will run this at stores again as before. Wonder if they will do something to make it harder to figure the coupons out this time around.

Is that sale in-store as well?

Is this going to take the form of an email code? I only get their offers at one email now so I guess I'll have to get lucky.

"Buy 1, Get the 2nd 50% Off Select Titles. Online & In Stores."

If there is stuff you want that is part of the sale, it will just minimize the number of times you have to use the 50% Off Coupon. Although I imagine some might be willing to try to use the deal, plus a Member and Non-Member coupon, which could conceivably work.

They will be posted here once released. Reports will surface soon thereafter with the codes matched to the appropriate % off. Such a coincidence how so many DVDTalkers wind up with a 50% off! ;)

To add to that, if the last round of coupons is any indication, the 50% Off Coupon will probably be the lowest numbered of the coupons.

101311 = 50%
101321 = 30%
101331 = 20%
101341 = 15%

So when these get released, if they're in sequential order, which they're very likely to be, everyone should just try the one that comes numerically first in the sequence, since it's most likely to be the 50% Off Coupon.

And with so many of them! Barnes & Noble must really love the business of the folks here at DVDTalk, lol.

If it is like the last mystery coupon offer they had a few months ago the answer is yes for the online version of the coupon. B&N will probably send a one use disposable online code with a undetermined mystery value. Most likely it will be one of the lesser value coupon codes, but you would have to check and verify the code with your B&N.com account to determine the actual percentage off.

Oh. I should have read that more carefully. I didn't notice the mention of "ONLINE" in the wording until now. I thought this was in-store as well.

As LASER mentioned, it will probably be a one-time use disposable code, specific to each account. Getting 50% off will truly be luck-of-the-draw. So much for the 8 titles on my wishlist. -ohbfrank-

Laser, do you need to have a membership in order to receive email coupons from B&N? I'm not a member, but I checked my account and my preferences are set to receive notices and communications. However I don't think I've ever received email coupons.

No, I don't think you need a membership to recieve non-member coupons. It seems to be randomly targeted. I get non member coupons/promos on several email accounts. Yet until recently, I didn't recieve any member coupons at all from my member account. I called CS a few weeks ago and complained about it and now get their emails.

Oh and I'm pleasantly suprised that they're doing the mystery coupon thing again. They must have had a spike in sales. I've seen several retailers do this "mystery coupon" promotion and they always drive up sales and traffic.
