No Costcos here in Tulsa. Still seems like that policy was written by someone high on crack. Why not buy something and then when something better comes along you just go and get your loan money back with the heavily used item? Seems silly to me from a business perspective especially when a large percentage of the population figures out what is going on here. I have really enjoyed this Betamax player for the last 20 years but now I've got my eyes on that new Blu-Ray player so I'm going to have to return it because I'm no longer satisfied with it.

I believe there are people on this site who have returned TVs 2-3 years later and used the credit toward a new TV without any problems at all, the 90 day thing is a relatively new policy...

That is a very liberal policy to say the least.

Costco tries to only buy high quality products and stands behind them fully.

They did change to 90 days on the above mentioned products due to "renter" abuse.

I will always buy my video game hardware there. No RROD worries for me.

Most murders are never solved, but you don't see everyone committing murder just because they will probably get away with it. The number of abusive "renters" versus people with valid reasons to return a product is pretty small.

Also, anybody who cuts out the UPC (for the 5 free movies) will not be able to bring it back to Costco.

Maybe not. I know for a fact that Costco will take back TVs without the box as long as you have all of the accessories(remote, cable, manual).

Yes, that's my understanding also.

In addition, the Toshiba A3-D3 sold at Costco has two identical UPC labels on the box. You can send one UPC label in for the 5 DVD offer and you'll still have a scanable UPC on the box in the event you need to return it.

Acording to this post Costco will be pulling them all out of stock.

I bought a D3 Sunday 2/24 at the Costco in Huntsville, AL. They had about 12 or 15, all with the two Bourne movies.

Thanks for the alert! I'm glad I was able to buy one before they were pulled from stock.

I have a second HDTV in my house and use my Costco HD-D3 for upconversion of my DVDs. I have a Blu-ray player on my main HDTV. I have seven free HD movies + Matrix collection which I could not wait to own on HD (Amazon $44). I'm sure I will find some very cheap HD movies as people try to sell their collection. Note that this machine has a Internet connection so you can update on-line. It's a nice machine, faster than my Blu-ray and I've had not problems at all with it.

I found the D3 at the Costco on Winchester in Memphis. They had around 10 left. I stopped by Best Buy and saw a sales rep showing an A3 for $129. I told the customer to high tail it over to the costco to save $50, but I am not sure he did( I don't think he even knew that HD DVD was a dead format). The Best Buy did not have any other HD DVD models on the shelves....just the A3

yes they do, and that is why I think people feel comfortable buying many things from them. For example, I always try to make my purchases there because the prices are typically very good, I know I'm getting good quality, and I don't have to worry about it breaking.

Sidebar story: last christmas I saw the complete series of "Northern Exposure" for $99, and mentioned to the woman working their (she's always in the DVD department and I go there often) and I mention that I would purchase the set if I didn't have the first three seasons already. She said to return them, eventhough I purchased them over a year ago. So I decided to try it, and for $34.99 for each of the 3 seasons, and actually had money in my pocket after buying the complete series.

I caught that later, when looking at stock online, but I swear it said A3 in the store.....maybe I missed the 0 on the end of the A3.

For those still considering the purchase of one of these players, today (2/28/08) is the last purchase date that will qualify for the 5 Free HD-DVD mail-in offer.

The rebate submission itself needs to be postmarked by 3/31/08:

Rebate Form

Unscrupulous buyers exploiting Costco's generous return policies forced them to change to the 90-day policy. AVS Forum is rife with anecdotes of people cheerfully bragging about taking back their old TVs when some new hotness arrives. This is the same reason GameStop stopped accepting returns of games. Too many punks were buying, beating, returning, rinsing, repeating games, stretching their $50 investment into eternity. Don't forget that Costco extends warranties to two years to protect those with genuine problems.

We don't have Costco in Madison. There's one being built now and it will open in the fall. ( ).

But I went to Sam's today and found the D3 for $68.01.

Excellent! Be sure to save a copy of the rebate form while it's still available.

Yes, I've got it. I bought an A30 in January so I'm going to be picking second tier choices from the offers. I'll keep Babel and Charlie but probably sell the rest if they're in salable condition and if anyone still wants them when they come in May or so. I've already listed 300 and Bourne Identity on half.com as I got them with the A30. (I chose The Italian Job, The Thing, Full Metal Jacket, The Frighteners and Darkman when I sent in the rebate form for my A30. I also picked up free copies of Zodiac and Eastern Promises in-store from Best Buy with that one)

FWIW, that is the one reason holding me back from buying one of these as an upscaler.
You can make the A2 and the XA2 play PAL and region free with a few hacked firmware downgrades/upgrades. They still produce 50hz though so your set has to support that. I did that to my XA2 just a few weeks ago.

Region-free only hack (no PAL) of the players is doable, easier, and no issues with 50hz.

The players still stumble on those stupid RCE discs and require a remote code to play.

Anyone got their free/rebate HD-DVDs since Costco put these on clearance?

Just wondering.

I haven't gotten them yet.

You are kidding right. You probably won't get your discs until June of July if at all. I am still waiting to get some from December.
