Blockbuster: 3 for 20 used DVDs

Title says it all. Any used titles under 15 bucks, which is really all of them (except for the odd TV set that someone might have traded in) Seems to be a recurring holiday weekend thing. Supposed to last until Sept 10. The last sale around July 4th's scarce items are plentiful in stock, like the 2 discs of Pan's Labyrinth and Ghost Rider. Some other newer titles starting to trickle out like Black Snake Moan and Shooter. The 4 for 20 for all 10 bucks or cheaper ones is still going on, but that's pretty much a year round staple at this point. Myself, I got Black Snake Moan, Apocalypto and the Dead Girl (sorely overlooked movie).

Working there, I also saw a few more newer titles being transferred next week, among them a couple Hot Fuzzes and Pathfinders. None out at my store yet, but if you're interested you might want to ask your local one.

There's also a sale on 300 brand new, the single disc. 5 bucks off, running about the same time. However, since the regular price sucks anyway (21.99) it's not exactly a bargain.

I always liked these sales. I pick them up and just switch cases. Real cheap.

Same here.

Gunna swing by tomorrow and see if mine has anything

Brent L 09-02-07 12:19 AM

Me and my cousin went to a Blockbuster earlier tonight and noticed this deal. He has a big box of extra cases that he bought, so we just switch out the Blockbuster cases for the ones that he has (single caes, double disc cases, white cases, etc).

Anyway, I think I did well tonight. For $21.40, I got the following:

-Black Snake Moan
-Insomnia (Criterion Collection)
-Ratcatcher (Criterion Collection)

:)

Also, as a side note, do not simply trust the prices listed on the cases. The deal is for anything $14.99 and under, that part is true. However, many things that have a $16.99 sticker actually rings up at $14.99 (if not all of em). When I picked out my three, Insomnia was listed at $16.99, and I simply went up to ask if I could get the 3 for $20 deal. They said no, so I decided to have them scan it to make sure the price was right. Just as I suspected, it did scan at $14.99. My cousin had another one he wanted that was priced at $16.99, one of the Dragon Dynasty DVDs, and it also actually scanned at $14.99 instead

So, if it's $16.99 (or maybe more, who knows), GET THEM TO CHECK IT TO SEE IF IT ACTUALLY RINGS UP AT $14.99 INSTEAD.

alfonsosoriano 09-02-07 12:43 AM

Nice steal there man. I'll probably get the Pan's Labyrinth 2-Disc with two other DVDs on my next trip in.

JayPen 09-02-07 05:22 AM

Got Pan's, Black Snake Moan and Factory Girl today. Still looking for Miss Potter for the wife, but overall I was happy.

TheMovieman 09-02-07 11:47 AM

Going to stop by there later. Hopefully mine will have Black Snake Moan and the 2-disc Pan's Labyrinth.

marty888 09-02-07 11:53 AM

Earlier this week I picked up the following 3 for $20:

CHILDREN OF MEN
THE HISTORY BOYS
PAN'S LABYRNTH (2-disc)

There are several others there I'm interested in, so I'll probably stop by during the week for some more.

critterdvd 09-02-07 01:01 PM

Whoa thats a good deal since its the $14.99 are included... usually something like this is limited to the $9.99 titles...

TheMovieman 09-02-07 08:38 PM

Well, picked up Black Snake Moan and Pan's Labyrinth. Hate those cases (and would've gladly paid a bit more at HV), but BB is the only one that has the 2-disc PL.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Hollywood Video has the 2-disc version of Ghost Rider, yet the 1-disc of Pan's.

RUN-DvdMC 09-03-07 09:20 AM

Got Curse of the Golden Flower (hope I don't have to double dip on this one, but I have a bad feeling about it), the Number 23, and Pride. Thanks OP!

josh4040 09-03-07 09:30 AM

does anyone know if Perfume was amongst those available?

Brent L 09-03-07 07:21 PM

Yeah, I saw Perfume at two different Blockbuster stores today.

Jasko 09-03-07 08:17 PM

mine has the 4 for 20 sale going on.

Brent L 09-03-07 08:28 PM

Yeah, it's a 3 for $20 ($14.99 and under) and also a 4 for $20 ($9.99 and under).

Not at Blockbuster. The 9.99 titles are always 4 for $20, aren't they?

The "4 for $20" has basically been ongoing for many months now, so yes, it's practically a permanent feature.

The "3 for $20" unfortunately morphs into the much less desirable "2 for $20" for much of the time.

thomkai 09-04-07 02:00 AM

When this sale happened last time I remembered it being short so I talked my g/f into going in on Sunday night to check it out with me. I hadn't realized there were so many movies we both liked and hadn't picked up yet (especially since I am supposed to be saving money and NOT buying DVD's, but with some new cases, this is almost as good as Columbia House, and with much less hassle).

Anyway, picked up 3 bundles (Two 3 for $20 and One 4 for $20):
3 for $20:
Pans, Children of Men, Casino Royal
Music and Lyrics, Pursuit of Happyness, Little Miss Sunshine

4 for $20:
Stranger than Fiction
Science of Sleep
Two more I can't remember and it's really bugging me, AND my g/f took them with her (since she bought two of the bundles, they are hers.)

Sorta regret getting Children of Men; I forgot how barren it seems (get it?); it's basically a quick release with some title print stamped to the disc and a few extras thrown in. Not worth the $15 it was priced at (used), but at about $6 overall I guess I can't complain too much.

Layziebones 09-06-07 11:09 PM

3 Questions.
1. Does anyone have a full/partial list of some of the newer 14.99 movies?
2. Does blockbuster still buy your movies?
3. Will they buy movies you bought from blockbuster or have blockbuster cases?

sinizine 09-07-07 12:42 AM

1. Not really. Some stores transfer out stuff earlier than others. Most everything that was released before July is out on previously viewed. Some July stuff is out too, but they're going to be in smaller amounts. Virtually no August releases yet. Really just depends on how many the stores got. Astronaut Farmer, for example, didn't set the money world on fire, but most stores got hardly any, so it's always out of stock, and I wouldn't expect to see it on PVD until the end of the year. And then you have something like Hot Fuzz, which most stores got a ton of that's already going out on PVD.
2. Yes. Not exactly the best deal in the world though. Some they won't take though, usually depending on how many they have (generally, if they sell it and it's cheaper than 10 bucks, they won't take it)
3. Yes, but like number 2, it depends on the title. Something like Pan's Labyrinth, yes. Something like Date Movie, which has been 3.99-5.99 for a good few months now, probably not.

Does anyone know if you actually have to buy 3 DVDs to get the discount? I know the sign says you have to, but so do the ones at Hollywood Video and they always give you the deal, even if you only buy one.

yes, the coupon will not work otherwise.

Adrenaline 09-08-07 06:28 PM

I got:

Deja Vu
Ghost Rider Extended Cut 2 disc
Pan's Labyrinth 2 disc

sinizine 09-10-07 01:02 AM

Giving this one last bump because the sale ends tommorow. Some new titles trickling out, like Shooter and the Number 23 as well.

mattysemo247 02-14-08 03:09 PM

This deal is up again at all Blockbuster locations. 3 for $20 on all newer movies (Transformers, Spiderman 3, etc.), 4 for $20 on some older ones (Disturbia, Blades of Glory, Shooter, ect..) and a bunch for $3.99. Sale ends 2/18/08

gryffinmaster 02-16-08 08:58 PM

Thanks for the warning shot!

Picked up:

La Vie en Rose
Inland Empire - 2-Disc
Eastern Promises

... all for < $22. :D:up:

TheMovieman 02-17-08 12:49 AM

Picked Up:
- Lucky You
- The Lives of Others
- Rescue Dawn (from what I saw, it was the only copy out there)

Imail724 02-17-08 11:25 AM

Saw Jackass 2.5 in the mix. Going to try to pick it up with a two others, couldn't justify paying $20 for it alone.

Jacoby Ellsbury 02-17-08 11:34 AM

another month or two and this will be the sale price for new versions in stores for most of the titles.

BobO'Link 02-17-08 01:19 PM

^So true. I've given up purchasing used or "previously viewed" because of this. I then get a new copy in a "regular" case instead of the awful rental cases most rental stores resell in for the same price or less than a used copy.

For those who purchase used from Blockbuster, the Blockbuster here throws out/recycles the original cases (I've been given differing stories). If you ask you can usually get a few of these free when purchasing used titles.

mattysemo247 02-18-08 07:59 AM

Just got back from my second run. Picked up:

3:10 to Yuma
Superbad
Rush Hour 3

Shack 02-18-08 09:39 AM

I picked up:
Eastern Promises
The Bourne Ultimatum
28 Weeks Later

(will probably pick up a second trio later)

Kory 02-18-08 12:29 PM

When does this end?

TGM 02-18-08 12:45 PM

My local Blockbuster always has a 2 for $15 deal going, including the new releases, just off the rental shelf... am I the only one?

Kory 02-18-08 10:59 PM

Picked up "Eastern Promises," "3:10 To Yuma," and "Pan's Labyrinth (2-Disc)." I hate the Blockbuster cases and I'm a little bummed about not having the slipcovers, but oh well. Great price.

woemcats 02-19-08 10:31 AM

Is this sale still going on? I could head over there on my lunch hour. I picked up Simpsons Movie, Bug, and Black Book last weekend, but I'd like to get Harry Potter 5, Sunshine (if it's out yet), and another.

Target sells black, empty DVD cases in batches of 10 for about $8, I believe. I just replace the crap HV and BBV cases with these. Looks brand new. (Not a solution for two-disc releases, however.)

Mine always has 3/20 and the 4/20 deal running. I think it may be due to the mom and pop store across the street having 7.50 and 3.33 movies or maybe it's a franchise location

woemcats 02-19-08 01:58 PM

Sadly, the sale had just ended at the location I visited over lunch. Too bad, too, as I spotted a bunch of good titles. I probably would have picked up Sunshine, Away from Her, and Once.

On the other hand, now I will likely wait until all of those titles are marked down to $9.99 and eligible for the 4/$20 sale (which was still going on).
