2 disc Lord of War 7.50 @ Target

Picked this up when I saw the price dropped to 9.44, was surprised when it rang up 7.50. It was the fixed OAR version.

Also just to add, found a widescreen copy of the cable guy for 5.50. A very good trip to target!

Hmm, might have to check this out. I have the incorrect AR so for $7.50, I might pick it up.

It was in the DVD wall in the Media Department. It was an unadvertised sale so i don't know if it was only in the store I went to in Atlanta.

Might be a regional or clearance thing. My Target has it for $9.44.

Was there an "unfixed" version? Is there a thread or link about this? I'd like to know if the one I bought a long time ago (used from Blockbuster for $3.99) has a problem.

The film was shot in 2.40:1, When released on dvd it had 3 versions.
A one disc Full Screen release. a one disc Widescreen release and a 2 disc Widescreen release. The problem is the widescreen was a cropped transfer loosing alot of the picture, the widescreen copies were at 1.78:1. Which is almost as bad as fullscreen in this case. After alot of excuses a few months later lionsgate quietly released the correct version for the 2 disc release.
At first they kept the same artwork with a black sticker near the left side bottom stating the new aspect ratio. Newer pressings have the correct ratio printed directly on the case.

I don't know if they ever released corrected versions for the one disc version.

Maybe it was on sale last week? That's the way a lot of Target's $9.44 DVDs end up getting priced, and I know it was the week for $9.44's to be lower.

That's possible, I bought it last night ( Sat. ) So as of today it could be off sale. But still at 9.44, it's a good deal.

I have been seeing these at most Target stores lately in the past few months since I had to go exchange my copy for the correct OAR. They are usually in one of the endcaps with a bunch of other sale dvds. I have only seen copies with the replacement sticker over the OAR, and I still am seeing lots of copies with the wrong OAR too, so be careful with that.

Thought I would pick it up, even if it was $9. Target near me had 90% original versions and only 2 or 3 copies w/ the corrected sticker.

ScissorPuppy, thanks for the explanation. I checked my Lord of War and sure enough it's the 1.78:1 version. I couldn't notice any edge cropping, but I assume others know what they're talking about. I don't suppose there are any comparison screenshots somewhere?

I can't think of any way to get the correct version without trading in the old one for a loss and paying another $7.50. Will LionsGate do anything through the mail? On the positive side my discs are in good shape with no stickers on them, so you'd never know they were from Blockbuster.

I wound up buying the one-disc on sale at Circuit City for $7.50 and selling my two discer for about that on Amazon (minus fees, of course). I probably lost a few bucks (especially when you consider I probably paid $15 for the 2-disc when it came out but then never watched it because I was annoyed by the whole aspect ratio thing), but at least I have the right aspect ratio.

Hmmm, when I type it all out it seems really stupid.

Lord of War is included with the other $7.50 titles this week at Target. Saw a few with the corrected aspect ratios during my brief trip there this afternoon.

I like Cage, despite some of his reported missteps recently, and wanted to see this movie and didn't.

I don't often do blind buys. Is this worth it?

I feel it is cages best film in the past few years. He has made alot of misteps.

The trailers had this film looking like an action film, it's not.

I love this movie, some don't.

It's worth 7.50 no doubt.

Saw it at the local Target here: it went from 13.78 to 9.44, and now it's officially 7.50.

Grabbed a copy myself at the Woburn, MA store for $7.50.
At least half the 2-discers on the shelf were labeled with the bad aspect ratio.

It's the correct one if the bottom left corner of the back cover says 2:40:1 aspect ratio instead of 1:78:1. That was the way I told the difference when I bought mine at Target during lunch today. There wasn't a sticker on it or anything.

The Target store that I was in this evening had a $7.50 sale sign for it.
AND LOL, they had the complete selection of the various aspect ratio possibilities described by ScissorPuppy:
about 3 copies of the 1.78:1 printed cover,
and about 3 copies of the 2.40:1 printed cover,
and a couple copies of the cover with the 2.40:1 black sticker!
And the same UPC on all versions.

Really sucks that they didn't recall the 1.78:1 copies instead of selling them out to unsuspecting suckers, IMO.

The reddish part is how much of the film was cut, just so it would fit your entire screen on a widescreen television. On a widescreen television, the 2.40:1 will have bars on the top and bottom.

If the director didn't use tight shots, you may not notice too much. But if he did, then it certainly will make a difference.

FWIW, I only saw the movie once, so I can't remember one way or another how the movie looked. I guess since I can't remember, it was ok to me at the time.

I heard about the cropped widescreen, but didn't know about the corrected discs, so I have been avoiding the DVD.

After reading this thread, I stopped by Target today. I picked up the 2-disc widescreen. The box has the little black sticker in the corner with 2.40:1.

Thanks guys!
