Fye - Trade 2, get 1 Used Free
Just came back from my local FYE's. Have an interesting deal - trade 2 movies in, and get 1 used DVD up to $14.99. Can pay $ if over.
So, my wife and I are stocking up at Big Lots $2 movies, and essentially getting a lot of used stuff at Fyes for $4.
Better yet, some managers (YMMV) will give you $14.99 store credit on a card. They said they can't do this a lot - so you will have to go and trade 2 a day for this to work. The advantage for this is a) have more money to buy if want you want is less than $14.99, and b) can use it for new stuff.
Sale end on 2/14.
Yes, I know Fye's used prices are high - but this is a great way, imho, to clean out my unwanted pile in the house and a cheap way (via Big Lots) to get some very interesting movies that I would doubt I would get to pay $4 for. (for example, they had the 2 disc Treasure of the Sierre Madres for $15.99 - which would have cost me only $1 + tax!)..
Sorry if this is a dupe - I didn't find it in my search.. Please close if appropriate.

Oh. It's two for 1 USED. I thought the promotion was for new DVD's.

Any limits/restrictions?
In case your looking for trade in values. FYE & Suncoast prices match Secondspin.com. My guess is they use the same system (while wherehouse adds on a couple dollars for shipping prices). I've got some anime that i wouldnt mind dumping. Though most likely my FYE wont be doing this deal, or will add some horrendous fine print to it (something around the lines of all trades must be worth $10 credit).
Guess i can check it out later today. It'd be nice if Suncoast was doing it to. They have a bunch of used anime i want for less than $14.99

just to clarify. this is different than getting normal trade in credit for your DVDs. it is a fixed amount- 2 trade ins = up to 1 $14.99 used. I like this better - because you HAVE to get $14.99 for 2 trade ins if they accept the dvd - regardless of how much you paid for it or what it's worth. Or, another way of looking at it, they will guarentee giving you $7.50 store credit for each DVD (in bunches of two) - that's a lot better then the average I have been getting at FYEs or Blockbuster.

Traded in 14 dvds earlier - they wouldn't take 3 of them b/c they were worth a penny though.
It kinda worked out in my favor - though i could have pressed it further, i didn't.
He gave me all the credit based on the sticker price, then when he rang up the free ones, a few turned out to be cheaper than marked. The final price was $-2.66 when i should have owed about $6 from tax. He said I owed the 2.66, not that it was due to me - but instead of having him re-ring everything(and piss him off, which i didnt want since im going back later...) and have to pay the real amount I just paid him. He'll just have to explain why their was a $5 difference at the end of the night i guess.

Looks like it's time to dump a bunch of crap at FYE.
Back when I first opened my store (selling used DVD's), Blockbuster did their deal of trade in any DVD for $8 store credit. I took almost every DVD in my store priced at $6 or less (which I paid $4 each for) and traded them in for $8 each at Blockbuster. After several days of bringing in movies, I had about $2000 in store credit. Then I would use that credit to buy the most recent titles taken off the rental shelf, and I'd sell them for $11-$13 in my store (my cost was something like $8 each, I figured).
I don't have as many crap titles to trade in now, but I do have a bunch that I've been trying to offload at $3 each or buy 2 get 1 free. A lot of those are crap public domain titles, but we'll see what I can get out of them.

this is a chainwide promo, and should be running at all TWEC stores. I can confirm Coconuts.
also good for video games, trade 2 get 1 used ($9.99 or less) can't be sports games pre 2007.
and CD's trade 2 get 1 used $9.99 or less also

My question is this having never bougt a used DVD from FYE:
1) How strict are they about the condition of the DVDs you trade in?
Related to this.
2) What is the condition of the used titles you would then purchase? Also do they let you look at a disc before you buy it?
Thanks.

they do a 'quick' inspection (usually a 2 second look) to see the condition of your disc you are trading in. Just to see any major smudges, scratches, etc. As far as the ones you buy, I don't know. they have a 'guarentee to play' and the ones I got so far were pristine. Also, some of the used are actually still in their original shrink wrap!

a couple questions just to clear this up? Suncoast/FYE/Coconuts are having the trade 2 get 1 used up to a 14.99 value?
Now, If i purchase at biglots they definately will take those generic unknown dvd's? they wont refuse them?
also is there a limit to how much you can trade in one day? could I trade 20 movies in at one time?
Thanks

Here's how it worked for me. I picked the used DVD's I wanted and brought them to the counter with my trade-ins. They rang up their used DVD and then priced my two trade-ins to match the price. So, I did not get $14.99 of trade-in value unless I bought a $14.99 used DVD.
One of my trade-ins did not scan on their computer, so they would not accept it. They also did not check my trade-ins for scratches (or even check inside to see if a disk was there
They said my trade-in's would have gotten $1 to $2 each, so trading two for up to $14.99 seemed pretty good. I'll be heading back again before this promotion ends!!
Oh, and the clerks seemed pretty clue-less on this process. They had to call someone up to show them how to do it. Lastly, they would not let me get $14.99 credit for a dvd that was priced higher. They said the promo was only for used dvds priced $14.99 and below.

Went back a 2nd time and got 4 more DVDs. I was able to get a 15.99 one as well. I said I'd pay the extra buck but they gave it to me for free anyway. Probably because other free dvds weren't all 14.99 and the manager at the time was cool.

To answer my own question, they took all 4 dvds. I found LOTR:ROTK EE for $15.99, but they wouldn't let me just pay the difference so I wound up getting a different one. Decent deal considering the trade-in value of two of them was $0.25. The cashier was cute, but had a dead look in her eyes and I could tell that she did not want to be there so I didn't bother asking about getting store credit instead.

sounds like each manager has his/her own spin on this. the first mgr told me i COULD get $14.99 credit - i found a 14.99 movie so didn't need it. the next day (today) another mgr told me 'no way - you HAD to get a used movie under $14.99". The first mgr told me I had to pay tax no matter what - the second mgr said I only had to pay tax if the movie was exactly $14.99- otherwise they would include it in the trade in. The first mgr said 'no problem getting something more expensive- just pay the difference' - the second mgr would not allow this.
And this is at the same store!!!
so tbwmp88, hope this answers your question.
Great deal - but definitely needs some work on implementing, in my opinion.
Unfortunately, I already have a lot of the good stuff they have, and without store credit not sure if I will continue trading with FYE. Will check back in a few days - maybe they will have traded in some good stuff...
