Had the zero-empty cart problem here as well. They are going to go ahead and ship the full order and have e-mailed me a return label already for the dvds I didn't want. CSR was very helpful and apologetic about the situation. I imagine this would much more complicated if a pre-order were involved.

Just placed my first "this is what I've gotta have!" order...going to put in my Christmas shopping & other stuff I want order next week.

DDLGE018805D WEEDS-1ST SEASON 1 $19.82
DDPIO012378D PARANOIA AGENT V.02-TRUE BELIEVERS 1 $15.96

After skimming this thread, I've got a sinking feeling that I could've gotten a better deal on Weeds elsewhere (either that or no one likes it except for me...).

I remember looking for this one a few weeks ago and I couldn't find it. They're probably just out and haven't gotten a new shipment in yet. I remember during the last sale I was looking for the Criterion edition of David Cronenberg's Videodrome, but they didn't have it. A few days later it was back in stock. So either check back toward the end of the sale, or just buy it from DVD Planet - it will only be $1-2 more expensive there, even with the 20% off sale.

^Anybody have an idea if this actually is the "book-2pack"? I'd imagine the picture is wrong.

Peopld who ordered this item in June reported getting the Book 2-pack, so I'd order with confidence.

windidiot, your philosophy is pretty close to mine. I am closing in on the 2000 mark in number of titles owned and have been collecting for about six years, trying to accumulate a complete library of any films/shows I would ever want to see. And I have only watched about 40% of what I own simply because I don't have the time (yet), but I know eventually that I will work my way through the entire collection at least once or twice (and some titles probably several times).

So for me it's all about the collecting at the moment. I know the time will come in the very near future when my purchases slow down to a few per year as I don't plan to upgrade to the high-def format for titles I already own unless they are in need of actual replacement.
I understand that idea, but a few things come into play, at least for me. The first is, since you don't watch a lot of these relatively soon, there's a chance of there being a defect of some sort. Case in point: I bought a TV set during the last sale and didn't even open it until August. That's when I realize I had been given a set with two of the first disc and no second disc. It was too late to return it.

Obviously, this problem can be solved just by opening them within 30 days, but then there's still the risk of playing defects, which you won't know until you actually watch them. Even I feel a bit uneasy with some of the DVDs still sitting in plastic on my shelf. If there's a problem, I'm out of luck.

The other thing is at what point does collecting become hoarding? I'm at around 550 titles and with the unwatched quantity and the fact that I ran out of shelf space months ago, I feel bad for even buying anything else. I know this is my case and not necessarily true for everyone else. But I still see a lot of people buy hundreds or thousands worth of DVDs during this sale with orders packed with titles that don't greatly benefit from the discount.

Like I said before, I try to stick mainly to pricier sets and titles I really want to see now. Other than that, it's a matter of being realistic and telling myself that I shouldn't buy x because by time I do get around to watching it, it will probably be available for less than I paid for it with the DDD discount. I know in the case of building a library, it's about being able to watch what you want when you want; why wait for a price drop when you can get one right now? I understand that, but see a lot of people going overboard all the same.

Sorry if anyone feels I'm threadcapping; those aren't my intentions. I'm just genuinely curious on the motives and mindset of those with huge, expensive orders. I'll probably be putting my lone order in on Tuesday, so I can "contribute" here then.

My room-mate and I are with you on a few points. Both of us tend to go insane with these sales, but then we take a step back and think for a minute.

Case in point, I held off on Battlestar (volumes 1-3) at this point because he has them all. Eventually I'd like to own them all myself, but why should I when he's got them on his shelf?

He avoided getting the Alfred Hitchcock set because I have it, etc etc.

I was *this* close to getting a few new TV sets when I stopped myself with some basic reasoning "Why buy La Femme Nikita: Season 5 when I JUST started season 2? By the time I'm up to season 5 it'll be next may anyways..."

There will always be a splurge (I'm getting the MASH set because it's an amazing price...) here and there, but I'm limiting myself much more than usual. I used to spend 400-600 on the sale. Now I think I'm going to hit about 400 tops. (and that's with 3 series sets in the mix).

Small first order:

DOCTOR WHO-1ST SERIES $ 52.88 1 $ 52.88

Before the sale, this was 71.86 (57.48 after 20% off).
When the sale started, it jumped to 74.99 (59.99).
Then it went to 66.11 (52.88).

Now it keeps jumping. So I grabbed it when it momentarily stabilized.
(Of course, I took screenshots. Just in case something goes wrong between now and the confirmation....)

Coming soon: at least one more order that I can't really afford....

Man Ive been asking and asking and no one knows nothing...

Anyone tried or seen the DVD - 'Going Back'?

It seems odd DDDVD doesnt carry it, and I know in the past some titles were kinda hidden.

I placed my first (maybe only) order and they priced matched Amazon on one of their $15 sets!!!! Whooo hoo!!

I don't think you're threadcrapping, but the bottom line is, at the end of the day, everyone on this board makes their own decisions and does what they want to do, for themselves. We're all in different life situations, and financial situations, and especially on this board where all we do is talk about buying DVD's, no-one can judge anyone else for what DVD's they buy.

Some people on this board have 100 DVD's. Some have 500. Some have 1,000. Some have 2,000. What's to make any one of those amounts proper or not? Each of us decides for ourselves.

I gather there are a fair amount of students on this board. I am glad this whole DVD thing started after I got out of college, as I could see the expense, hassle of moving back and forth, hassle of dealing with roomates borrowing and taking DVD's, getting to me.

I am 34, have a great job, make good money, have a wife, have a 2-year old. I have so little free time in my life, yet I keep buying DVD's. Why--because I can afford it, and because I love DVD's, be they movies, TV shows, documentaries, whatever. But I have way more than I need (probably around 600 or so), and way more than I have time to watch. But I made the decision to buy them, and no-one should be able to judge me for it.

I am starting to police myself a little though. Like I am eyeing the new Homicide complete set that is coming out next week. It is not cheap, but while I would love to have the set, I look at my shelves, and on top of the tons of movies I still have to watch, I see my copies of the Shield Seasons 3 and 4 that I haven't opened yet, and my Nip Tuck seasons I've barely started, and my Buffy box set where I still have to watch seasons 4-7. And lots, lots more. You get the picture--I may not watch the Homicide set until 3 years from now. So I likely won't buy it. But if I did, that's my choice.

Anyway, people should chill on questioning what others are buying. It's their business. Just my .02 cents.

If you're the type of person who has enough time on your hands to surf fifty other online merchants and five B&Ms to save yourself a buck and a quarter, go with God. But this thread is usually a good read, and this year the know-it-alls are making it a drag.
You make the assumption that everyone is doing a massive order. Lots of folks are only buying one or two items, and a "monday morning quarterback" does a valuable service when he points out a specific deal can be had elsewhere.

So MMQs, keep it up.
