Picked up three copies of Spaceballs 2 Disc CE today.

Thanks to all who've been posting their findings - I made it to my local BL today, and found quiet a few cool things. Even at these prices, I still couldn't afford to buy everything in my initial stack. But I did get seven movies and a book for $3 each.

One thing of note - 90% of these DVDs were NOT on the normal island rack display where they have put DVDs in the past. The rack was still there, with a few DVDs I've passed on before, and a lot of VHS. These MGM & new Sony titles that people are finding were over by the books at my store, piled up in four or five cardboard boxes on a shelf. I almost left before noticing this mother load. So it's worth a stroll though the store, just in case.

Jim, which St. Louis store did you hit? Seems like Mid-Rivers, St. Ann, Fairview Heights IL, and Crestwood didn't have them in the last week or two.

Don't think this one has been mentioned yet. Passed on it since it isn't anamorphic though (too bad as it sounds interesting).

The Green Butchers (2003)

Thread Suggestion!

I know there's a bunch of us who have appreciated this Big Lots thread, but it seems like it needs some cleaning up. It started back in 2006 and needless to say, is huge!

I'd like to suggest a new thread with the first post(s) containing a "Master List" of titles discovered which can be kept up making it easy for you to add new titles that are found.

If there's no objections, I'm willing to start it up. I've begun putting together a list of DVDs discovered over the last 6 months or so. Once the new thread is underway, I can update the list (at least weekly or possibly more often).

JiM T 04-24-08 10:03 AM

DTStratovarius - the store I found the mother load at was the Kinghighway store in South City. If you're looking for any particular titles, I can probably let you know if they were there or not. I got:

Rhapsody in August
Oleanna
Coming Home
Philadelphia
In Cold Blood
Hannah and Her Sisters
Grateful Dawg

Didn't see the Batman Serials, Panic Room, or Heroes, to name a few higher profile titles that others are finding. But, there were still a lot of titles to be had.

I'd go back and check them out again. I was at the Festus store on Sunday and they didn't have anything went yesterday evening and found the MGM titles and the Memento 2 disc which I've never seen in St Louis before.

Be sure you let him know if there was more than one copy of this, since he's supposed to pick one up for me. ;)

DTS - check your PM's. :)

I understand your thinking, and I'm not really opposed to it, but the inventory is so fluid(a la Ross Dress for Less) that I'm not sure a running list will be particularly effective. From what I can tell, the older pages are more for historical reference than anything that you might actually find. Just my two cents.

Also, I haven't been able to find any of the MGM stuff at my local stores yet. Never did see Easy Rider come through. My hope is it will show up really late like the Batman serials.

Quatermass 04-24-08 06:09 PM

Woohoo! Huge restock at my local BL today. I picked up 10 of the aforementioned titles and they had many new ones. They didn't have Spaceballs, but they had the World cinema and other MGM movies.
I got:
Memento
Sheena (FS)
Heavy Traffic(FS)
Robocop 2
Robocop 3
The Fog
Guns of the Navarone
The Prisoner (1955)
Don't Come Knocking
Mountain Patrol

for 32.34 with tax. They also had Hannibal, Philadelphia, Casualties of War, and most of the others mentioned.

basaro 04-24-08 06:56 PM

Don't think I saw anything new today, MAYBE these haven't been mentioned before:
Into Thin Air
Slaves Of New York
Blankman FS
USS Poseidon ...some subtitle...
Death Tunnel
Bachelor Party Vegas
Soccer Dog European something...

Hate this. Its not like I am asking the city of Philadelphia to come to the west coast. I haven't seen this disc in any of the SoCal BL's

Peep 04-24-08 07:49 PM

Which disc?

JiM T 04-24-08 08:24 PM

Kingshighway store in St. Louis had at least one more "Rhapsody in August", probably more. They were on an endcap shelf, as opposed to the boxes of DVDs, which were on a nearby shelf.

On my way to Kingshighway/South City....I stopped by Crestwood, and they had a copy of it for David (printerati), while there I finished up hunting for "F/X 2," and picked up another 4 titles. They did look to be somewhat picked through.

Thanks again for the info,
Matt

Thanks, Matt. Got your PM...check your inbox for a reply.

Everything I saw today has already been found...several copies of Robocop 3, several copies of the fullscreen Castle Keep, and a few copies of the Ferrer Moulin Rouge, among others. Still no sign of anything in the "World Films" series.

I agree with your thoughts as well. Guess I've seen many posts (and I've made them myself) that involve "I saw this title/that title--don't think it's been listed before" when it has been 2 pages back. A thread that had a central list at the beginning might be of some use, though as you've pointed out could become out of date quickly.

Also, there's been many other threads with far fewer posts than this one that have been closed for 'length' so a new thread may be a necessity in the near future.

By the way, thanks moklerman for starting this thread. Big Lots has come a long way since the initial post. As someone else mentioned before, $3 is the new 'price point' for regular DVDs in my mind.

I miss the $2 pricing of a lot of the Sony titles from early 2007.

DeepSleep 04-25-08 11:48 AM

Saw the following lesser mentioned titles at Biglots today. They were $3 each:

Last Action Hero (Schwarzenegger)
Wake of Death (Van Damme) This dvd has me perplexed, on the back it says 1.78:1 and right underneath it says 4x3 Letterbox. Is this dvd widescreen? fullscreen? a flipper with both? I have never seen a dvd with this aspect ratio description. Anybody have this dvd?

Sounds like it's matted, instead of anamorphic. So it will look like teh suck on widescreen TV's.

mjohn 04-25-08 01:48 PM

usually animation is filmed full frame and matted though...not sure if that's the case here, but MGM seems to have a lot of matted films (leading to the asinine lawsuit some years ago, where fools accused them of deceit for releasing them accurately as matted, claiming that instead it was P&S)
