Boba Fett 06-09-08 12:47 AM

I picked up the Rock 'n' Roll High School disc and from what I've researched, it appears that possibly the same transfer and audio have been ported from this release, to the New Concorde release, to the Buena Vista release (which claims it's anamorphic but isn't).

Skyclad01 06-09-08 01:05 AM

This evening I got:

- Mom And Dad Save The World
- The Hitcher
- The Night Flier
- Taxicab Confessions: New York
- Dennis Miller: The Raw Feed
- Chris Rock: Never Scared
- David Spade: Take The Hit

Hmmm. I actually have the BV version. I didn't know it had so many releases. To bad nobody's ever cleaned it up.

obscurelabel 06-09-08 07:52 PM

Picked up these HBO titles at the Douglasville (GA) Big Lots today for $3 each:

Elephant
Angels in America
Maria Full of Grace
Norma Jean and Marilyn
The Comeback
The Changeling (with G. C. Scott)
Cracker series one

For anyone looking for something worthwhile to pick up, I will again recommend Still Crazy (be sure to get the flipper with both WS and FS versions, not the FS only). Think Spinal Tap but played more or less straight, with some funny moments, good faux-1970s rock songs, and a great cast (featuring Stephen Rea, Billy Connolly, Timothy Spall, and especially Bill Nighy). Well worth $3 IMHO.

Please see complete list in my exchange thread:

Other than what's in that list, I am also looking for these Big Lots/Ross titles:
Fantastic Children Vol.3
Wolf's Rain Vol.3
Failsafe
Castle Keep (WS)
Sheena (WS/FS)
SK's The Shining (TV)
Suspect (WS/FS)
Narnia 4-disc (spotted at Ross, etc)

I picked up an extra Cracker Series One today if anyone wants to trade for anything I'm still looking for. I think FC vol.3 is on the way, but I still need the other stuff.

...also saw the Imax dvds and HBO restock today. No copies of Hitchhiker 2,3 or Angels In America. I think everything else has passed by though.

rider555 06-10-08 01:20 AM

I went to the one in Blue Springs MO tonight and believe it or not, though they are still doing a lot of remodelling, they had a bunch of new DVDs;HBO,Sheena,Blankman, etc.I also noticed a Best of Arliss and a Cracker set.

Ellen Degeneres - Here and Now
Ellen Degeneres - The Beginning

Lucky Louie is definately worth picking up. It is one of the most outragous sitcoms ever made, too bad it only lasted 12 episodes.

I was just in there today and to add to your list they also had Superbits of Gattaca and Crouching Tiger. The HBO titles must have been picked through already by today, because they had very few of them. A couple documentaries and a couple stand up (Ellen, Dennis Miller). Unfortunately none of the stand up I would have been interested in was still there, I was really hoping for some Lewis Black, Chris Rock, Louis CK, etc. The Best of Arliss was still there though, so I took it.

Mickactual 06-10-08 07:33 PM

This afternoon I picked up:

USS Poseidon: Phantom Below (Adrian Paul & Mike Doyle)
The Tenants (Dylan McDermott & Snoop Dogg)
Gattaca (Superbit)
Junebug
Dawson's Creek: The Series Finale

$3 each.

JohnIan 06-11-08 04:01 AM

Yesterday I finally found "Empire Falls", but both copies were stomped on and or used to crush walnuts. I passed.

Thanks for the heads up. I found it on my third trip to the same store. Don't know how I missed it the first couple of trips.

I didn't know anything about the show, so I decided to read up on it before making a decision. I have to admit, my interest in picking it up waned considerably after reading this on Wikipedia:

Episodes have occasionally displayed male nudity. Louis C.K. stated on his message board that there would not be female nudity on the show, claiming "Female nudity isn't funny" because you can't "laugh and jerk off at the same time".
I passed. Buyer beware. ;)

GenPion 06-11-08 09:54 AM

I got extra copies of the following for Trade:
The Comeback
Lucky Louie
The Best of Arliss

I am looking to trade for Angels in America (I am looking for two copies if possible) and The Iron Giant - Special Edition. I know it's been a while on Iron Giant but I heard others found it at Big Lots a while back. I'm not sure if anyone has found Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Chapter 5 but if anyone has I need to get that to finish off my collection so a definite trade exists there as well.

Always remember the cardinal rule of shopping at BL

I have thirty days to return it.

zombeaner 06-11-08 12:28 PM

Rock N Roll High School I believe is the same during the feature, but the new release has a couple of short featurettes. The original release had a great booklet though, so I would buy it for $3. In fact, when I sold the old version I kept the insert.

Squall280 06-11-08 12:30 PM

i picked up truth or consequences but when i got hoem i found out it's fullscreen. did they have a widescreen version of this movie ever available?

plenty of flippers out there (WS/FS) - package mentions it. you gotta look for it though - don't assume ARs, especially when being dumped for $3

I picked up The Comeback (blind buy) and Lucky Louie, as well as Autofocus. I have never seen so many DVD's at my BL before. They had a full 4-sided display, plus an entire display pallet with boxes double stacked. And I looked through every single DVD. Took a while, but I left happy...

bigt7117 06-11-08 06:02 PM

Got extra copy of Empire Falls, Mind of Married Man and Sweet Lowdown. Looking for The Hitcher, Angels in America and Lewis Black: Black on Broadway. Lmk if you wanna trade

Good thing they put the unaired episode on the dvd set...

I really enjoyed this show... finding it for only 3 bucks was amazing... picked up The Comeback as a blind buy and watched it all over the course of 2 nights, very underated show, too bad HBO cancelled it and LL... they are starting to have as little patience as the networks after being on such a streak for so long with all their big hits

darkside 06-12-08 12:39 AM

I found a few I was interested in, but no Lucky Louie.

Lewis Black: Black on Broadway
Jerry Seinfeld: I'm Telling You
One Night Stand: Louis CK
Dennis Miller: The Raw Feed
David Spade: Take the Hit
One Night Stand: Caroline Rhea

Earlier in the thread somebody mentioned the Jena Malone movie Confessions of an American Girl. Does anybody know the availibility of this title at Big Lots? I would really like to find this movie and would pay or trade for this movie. Also, is there any chance that other HBO films will find their way into Big Lots?

SeymourGams 06-12-08 04:26 AM

I'll do dirty things for a copy of the Comeback...

ScissorPuppy 06-12-08 07:31 AM

Found today for 3$ each.
In the line of Fire (Special Edition)
The Legend of Zorro (Special Edition)
The quick and the dead (Superbit)

I have never seen these at big lots before, so they may be part of a new batch coming. They only had one copy of each.

Other "New titles" I didn't get/want

Daddy Day Care
Guess Who
Into the Blue

That, my friend, is what bargain hunting is all about, its the thrill of the hunt! just maybe, you will find a copy of your movie you seek some place when and where you least expect to find it, and it will make it all the sweeter

Dr. Phibes 06-12-08 10:50 AM

I found a few things at the Big Lots in Cary, NC:

Hitchhiker Vol. 1
Best of Arliss
Mind of the Married Man
American Splendor

They had the David Spade and Caroline Rhea stand-ups there, but I passed on those. Oh, I also grabbed a pair of Ghost Rider boxers for $2 while I was there.

Yeah, I have found alot of movies at my local Big Lots that were a real bargin. Thanks to everybody here I know have some great titles. Unfortunately, I missed the earlier crop of foreign and independent titles. Most of the recent ones I have been able to find. The only two I really want know is Confessions of an American Girl and Gangster # 1. Hopefully, these two will find their way to my local Big Lots.

Turn in your man card for not picking up Into the Blue. ;)

I'll be looking for these titles tomorrow.

If that is the only title you are looking for, rather than spend $4+ in gas just to try and find it or ~$2 or so paying someone to ship it, could consider Amazon Marketplace. $6.50 shipped there which is about a $1 more than the least you could get it for if someone were to ship it to you.

Then again, I'm confident more MGM stock will be forthcoming as there are many more titles that MGM has been making available at the "bargain bin" pricing.

beebs 06-12-08 01:33 PM

Confessions would be $4.80 shipped from SecondSpin.com with the heynow code (-20% and free ship).

If you have the Superbit bug, there's lots of good deals at SecondSpin on additional superbits for $5-7 shipped as well.

ratherunique 06-12-08 01:57 PM

Thanks abintra and beebs for the suggestions. I just wanted to help out others by providing a fair exchange of titles they might find difficulty finding at their local Big Lots. Many of the rare titles mentioned show up on the shelves at my local Big Lots. I know how frustrating it can be searching for titles that never show up at your local Big Lots. Anyway, thanks everybody.

Jigen75 06-12-08 03:12 PM

I want to get Into the Blue, as long as its anamorphic

ScissorPuppy 06-12-08 04:24 PM

Into the blue is only 2 years old, I'm pretty sure it's anamorphic.

JAYARE 06-12-08 05:03 PM

if anyone has an extra Lucky Louie or can get one let me know.

DVDude! 06-12-08 05:34 PM

I'm interested in the widescreen flipper of Sheena if anyone is willing to sell theirs for a reasonable price. I've only been to two local Big Lots to no avail. Also, despite what the case says, I'd prefer it be checked first to make sure it has the WS version on it; i.e., opening it. Thanks!

I've cut down on this a bit with the gas prices, but I love bargain hunting. A big part of the fun is digging through this stuff in places like Big Lots, Dollar General and especially the used stuff at Half Priced Books, GameStop or the local used CD and DVD stores to find a deal.

Sometimes you come up empty, but many times you do find something you are looking for at a great price. I've built my Sopranos sets very slowly used deal at a time this way. I still need 4, 5 and 6 part II, but I will be patient and I will find them cheap at some point.
