does anyone know what version of steamboy is at Big Lots...been really wanting to get this movie...and was wondering if it was the director's cut or just the reg edition?
also if anyone has that 20% off coupon i would LOVE to get a scan of it :-D |
The Steamboy DVD is the Directors Cut (anamorphic widescreen) and includes an exclusive Otomo illustration. It sells for $3 in the Bay Area Big Lots.
I've attempted to post an image/scan of the coupon below. I'm new at this so let me know if it works or not. |

I FINALLY found a copy of Steamboy at one of my local Big Lots on Monday. This title has been eluding me for awhile.
|
One of my local stores finally had some restock, but nothing to get excited about.
No new anime. Some restock of Mill Creek stuff, Hitchcock, etc. And a huge NEW cardboard bin loaded with the same old Sony assortment, but only maybe twenty or thirty titles, just many copies of each title. The bin was spring/easter colors, light blue I think, and said "Spring into savings on DVD Entertainment" or something like that. They all sported fancy new Big Lots price stickers. They are square and white with the Big Lots! logo, UPC, and $3 price on them. Pretty spiffy! ;) No copies of Steamboy either :( , but last week I was still seeing them among the leftover stock at a couple of the stores. I think the one closest to me still has the copy I returned over a month ago. EDIT: 3 of 4 stores I went to yesterday had the new cardboard bin. Titles did vary among the stores, but there were a few titles that I hadn't seen before, even though they may have been spotted in other areas before: Gunslinger's Revenge Hustle And Heat Dead Birds Crimson Rivers - Angels of the Apocalypse (Special Edition) |

This was also at my nearest BL yesterday. |
I should also note that one of my local stores just received stock from a "drugstore buyout" (Eckerd) that contains some DVDs. These showed up in Eckerd-specific racks surrounded by disposable razors and shaving cream, not in the DVD/software racks. Most are priced between $4.99 and $9.99, plus an additional 20% off. This store had Roman Holiday, City Slickers, and various Saturday Night Live: Best Of discs at $7.99 after the discount, which isn't a deal at all. I imagine title selection will vary wildly among stores.

And... Anyone seen Heights? Any good, is it anamorphic? |
We bought and watched Heights last week. It is very good, superb cast, well written with a lot of shocks and twists and turns in the plot. I like these movies, where 5 different people discover they have something in common with each other as the plot moves forward. Its well filmed, very New Yorkish (ie the cult of Manhattan) and worth the 98 minutes of show time. I do not believe it is anamorphic, the back of the DVD cover simply indicates it is 1.78:1 Widescreen, as opposed to stating anamorphic widescreen as most DVDs do. We enjoyed the film and because of the twists and turns, it will probably rate another watching, now that we understand the connectivity of everyone, simply to enjoy the movie without the underlying questions of what the ties are to everyone.

think ill use this coupon to grab some of the shelves at my local big lots for cheap :-D thanks!

Unfortunately, CTHE is one of the studios that didn't always accurately list that info on the back cover. |
The bin is not at every store. It is usually in those stores where they run ahead of schedule.
Besides the titles mentioned (I didn't see Ali, but saw the rest) 1 lonely copy of Batman The Brothers A league of their own My Girl 2 |

I also saw the "Spring Into Savings..." bin today. All of the titles listed above, along with Wild Things 2. |
1) I have "The Woods" and thought it was very good. Not sure why it didn't get a lot of press/good reviews. Creepy but not outright scary.
2) I like Anime but absolutely despised Steamboy. Hated every cell of it. It is one of the very few (literally 1 out of 1000+) DVDs I simply could not watch through the end. I find it a 100% bore.. just my opinion. |
